Japchae
Hello, my name is Japchae. My animal id is #251822. I am a male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/11/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormJapchae is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Japchae has displayed a low threshold for arousal, which manifests in leash biting and mounting handlers on walks. Once over his threshold, Japchae can be difficult to refocus with treats or toys. He has displayed sociability with handlers in calmer settings and readily accepts treats and gives paw. Medically, Japchae is receiving treatment for CIRDC.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Japchae came into the care center as a stray due to this his behavioral history in a home environment is unknown. Japchae has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Date of assessment:: 4/20/2026
Summary:: 4/20: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: mild pulling Reactivity to humans: did not pass Reactivity to dogs: did not pass Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): readily accepted and sat for treats, would avoid handlers and wary of further interaction Call over: no approach Sociability comments: tense body, tight lip, low tail, hunched shoulders Handling Soft handling: stiff, muscled tightly clenched, widens eyes, slow lip licks Exuberant handling: unable to conduct - moves away from assessor Handling comments: Arousal Jog: unable to conduct - pancakes Arousal comments: Knock: square, forward posture Knock Comments: Toy: no response Toy comments: 4/15/26: Japchae is taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment. He is able to be distracted with treats, but displays a tense body and high tail, side eyes and dodges touch when the handler goes to attach a drag lead to his collar. When exploring the room, he remains stiff-bodied and seeks out treats from handlers but is avoidant of touch, becoming tense when attempts are made to pet him or when the lead is touched across his body, his skin will ripple. Due to Japchae being incompatible with handling, a handling assessment will not be condcuted at this time. 4/14/26: Japchae is taken to the behavioral office for handling assessment. He is able to be distracted with treats, but displays a tense body and high tail when collaring. When attempting to place him in a handling position, he doesn't approach and is avoidant with a tense body. When petted, he flinches and huffs, lip licking. He is given extra time to decompress.
Summary (7):: 04/25/25: When handing out enrichment Japchae is noted to growl over his food bowl. 4/24: Volunteer Note - During our walk tonight, Japchae mounted my leg after exiting the kennel, and again on the way to exit, but was easily redirected with treats. During our walk, he focused on his surroundings, peed and pooped, and in a few instances where he turned around towards me, I quickly tossed him treats to preempt mounting and we had no issues. We walked all around the block. 04/24/26: Japchae is noted to mount handlers during his am, pm walk and mount a volunteer. 04/23/26: Japchae is noted to mildly leash bite and mount handlers. 04/15/2026: (BA note): Japchae is standing at the front of his kennel and backs away, avoiding the leash as handler attempts to leash him, once leashed. He is escorted to the assessment room. Once inside, Japchae avoids all handling and contact from handlers. He will eat cheese off the couch but continues to avoid interaction. Due to persistent avoidance, the assessment is limited. Japchae is returned to his kennel safely without any issues. For more details, see behavioral assessment. 4/14/26 (late entry - assessment): Japchae is at the front of his crate with a neutral frame as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and is brought to the behavior office where he is given cheese on the couch while a collar is fitted. He will tolerate the fitting but remains tense throughout the session. (see assessment for more info) Japchae is returned to his kennel with no issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Japchae fearful behavior, a handling we reccomend he is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Japchae has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding When handing out enrichment, Japchae is noted to growl over his food bowl.Avoid forcing Japchae to give up his valued items, as this can exacerbate the guarding behavior. Consistency and patience are crucial in helping Japchae feel more secure and less inclined to guard resources. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Low threshold for arousal/Basic manners/poor impulse control: Japchae continues to demonstrate challenges with impulse control during walks and has been observed attempting to mount handlers. This behavior suggests overarousal and difficulty maintaining focus in stimulating environments. Ongoing work should emphasize calm leash walking, reinforcing alternative behaviors, and building tolerance for handling through consistent structure. Please see the handout on arousal and Basic manners/poor impulse control. Leash-biting:Japchae is noted to mildly leash bite during leashing. Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful: He is noted during his medical exam to solicit pets, comes to the front of the kennel, trashing and trying to avoid the leash. Japchae is taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment. Training should focus on slow, predictable handling, gradual desensitization to medical procedures, and reinforcing calm behavior to help reduce fear and improve coping skills during handling contexts. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity and decomposition period.
