Animal Profile

Whizzer

Hello, my name is Whizzer. My animal id is #237401. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/23/2025.

Whizzer is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Whizzer arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake Whizzer was noted to be fearful with tense body but allowed handling for medical exam. During his stay, Whizzer is showing concerning levels of reactivity toward dogs. He has been observed to become hyper-fixated when seeing dogs both in neighboring play-pens, or when on sidewalk on leash. Additionally, Whizzer has been noted high-pitch vocalize at times, become tense bodied, hard-stare and is unable to be redirected with treats or squeaker sounds. With familiar staff Whizzer is noted to be social and understands 'sit' commands. Medically Whizzer is noted to have dental disease but is otherwise apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary (5):: 11/2/25: Whizzer is at the front of the kennel, jumping up and down repeatedly. He is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the kennel room. Whizzer crosses in front of the handler and pulls towards a passing kennel with his legs spread out. Handler holds the leash firm and he continues to pull, standing up on his hind legs. Whizzer then exits the room and pulls towards the passing pop ups with the same behavior. He pulls very hard to the driveway and is placed in a leash harness. On the street he continues to pull hard and fixates towards dogs. Whizzer relieves himself and is walked back to the shelter where he continues to pulls hard and is returned to kennel without issue. 10/24/25- Whizzer is at the of his kennel jumping up on the door barking at the handler with a neutral body, he keeps jumping up at handler attempts to leash. They use a treat lure and he is easily leashed. He pulls hard exiting the room and is taken for a street walk. He sits in the elevator and gently takes treats. He pulls hard exiting the driveway and continuously does throughout the walk. Handler calls to him and presents treats, he gently takes them from handler's hand. He follows the command to sit and is rewarded. He goes to sniff some trash and handler presents a treat and he follows them. Handler scratches his head, neck and back, he leans into handler's legs. He has no reaction to people passing and holds his attention with treats. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 10/18/25: Whizzer is at the front of his kennel as handler approaches, he barks at handler but is distracted with treats and is leashed while distracted. Once leashed he exits kennel and pulls hard out to the hallway, while out he is hypervigilant but initially can be focused using treats. Whizzer follows basic sit commands and focuses on handler before being given his treat and walks with handler out to the street. While outside Whizzer sees multiple dogs and each time will be tense bodied and hard stare at the dog, he is unable to be redirected and even when being walked in the opposite direction he will attempt to plant his feet and continue to stare at the dog. Eventually he concedes and will continue walking with handler, he generally ignores people passing on the street and pulls moderately while outside. Whizzer walks for a while with handler and stops occasionally to sniff or relieve himself. After a while he is brought back to the care centers and his leash is clipped before he is returned to kennel, he pulls hard when returning and enters without issue.

When the handler attempts to leash him, Whizzer back away. The handler uses a squeaker and Whizzer slowly comes forward, allowing himself to be leashed. He is brought out of kennel; he looks at the dogs in kennel when walking out the room. Whizzer relieves himself when walking out the building. While walking on the street, Whizzer notices a dog in the distance; he looks back at the dog repeatedly until it is out of sight. Another handler and dog are walking in the direction of the handler and Whizzer, and as they cross the street, Whizzer fixates on the direction of the dog, continuing to walk forward, but turn his attention towards it. After he turns away, Whizzer walks ahead of the handler with some tension on the leash. He stops and sits down twice to receive pets and treats from the handler. When walking back into the building, Whizzer fixates on a familiar handler in the distance. Once they are close by, behind him, Whizzer continues to keep his attention on them, turning to look at them continously while walking inside. The handler brings and stands to the side to allow said familiar handler and other staff members to walk past. Whizzer watches them all walk away; he also pulls towards and sniffs another familiar handler with a loose body. The handler clips their leash and returns Whizzer with ease.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Whizzer so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Whizzer has been observed to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Whizzer has been observed to have a tense body and with flinch from loud noises. He is also avoidant of handlers. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Whizzer would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Whizzer is observed to pant, pace, and whine and while interacting with handlers. If Whizzer displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Whizzer has been obsvered to hard stare, become tense and fixate on other dogs. This behavior is not able to be redirected. Whizzer will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
