Hello, my name is Lilo. My animal id is #259387. I am a male black kitten at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/10/2026.

Lilo is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with kitten socialization and helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: ~ 10 weeks old Microchip noted on Intake? No History: Stray; DOH Hold, bit rescuer Subjective: BARH Observed Behavior - Growling and hissing. Feral. Is there evidence of suspected cruelty? No Objective: T = not taken P = 200 R = 28 BCS 3-4/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: neg oral PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupneic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: MI MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, dirty hair coat, no hair loss CNS: Mentation appropriate - no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: external WNL Wood's Lamp Exam: negative Assessment: ~ 10 week MI dsh 1. apparently healthy 2. On 07/20/2026 at approximately 9:30am, I examined Lilo 259387. He has appropriate mentation at this time with no neurologic signs present, and has not exhibited any neurological signs while at ACC.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Lilo was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment. Lilo was initially hidden under the client's car and did not approach food, suggesting it was fearful and prioritized safety over eating. When the client reached under the car and grasped the kitten, the kitten immediately bit in an apparent defensive response. This was a warning-free bite from the client's perspective, but frightened kittens may bite quickly when they perceive they cannot escape. After being placed in a zippered shopping bag, the kitten hissed, another defensive behavior indicating fear, stress, and an attempt to deter perceived threats.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Kitten socialization,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Lilo's behavior is most consistent with **fear-based defensive aggression**, not predatory or unprovoked aggression. Hiding, avoiding contact, biting when physically restrained, and hissing after confinement are common behaviors in unsocialized or highly stressed kittens that perceive humans as a threat. The bite likely occurred because the kitten's escape route was blocked and it responded with its primary means of self-defense.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to history and behavior seen at the Care Center, Lilo would be best suited in an adult home only.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Lilo was crouched in his den and hissed upon approach. When his den cover was lifted, he lunged and then retreated to the back of his den. The handler gave him time to decompress before holding out treats for him. He hissed at the treats. The handler was then able to pet along his head with the click stick, however he was hissing the entire time. The interaction was ended to reduce FAS. Lilo is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat / scratch / bite / is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
