Chillin is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Chillin has developed an upper respiratory infection; however, due to her behavior, thorough assessment and direct administration of oral or injectable medications cannot be safely performed, and medications must instead be provided in food. Chillin is currently stable, but consistent ingestion of the full prescribed medication doses cannot be assured in the shelter environment, which may limit effective treatment and negatively impact her clinical outcome.

Chillin came to ACC from a hoarding situation and is still learning that people can be friends. She is a very shy and independent girl who has become more curious and comfortable around other cats, but she remains cautious and unsure around people. Chillin will need a patient adopter who is willing to let her build trust at her own pace. My Ideal Home Chillin would do best in a quiet, adult-only home with an experienced adopter who understands shy cats. She will need consistent, gentle socialization, plenty of hiding spaces, and lots of time to adjust. High-value treats and positive interactions can help her build confidence, but she should never be rushed or forced into contact. Good with Kids? No. Due to her fearful nature and discomfort with handling, Chillin would do best in an adult-only home. Good with Other Pets? Yes! Chillin came from a home with many other cats and has been spending time successfully in a free-roam room with feline roommates. She has become more comfortable spending time around other cats and may enjoy having a calm feline companion. Overall Health Chillin is a healthy adult cat with no major medical concerns noted. Behavior Determination Experienced, adult-only home. Chillin is very fearful of people and may attempt to flee or avoid contact. She will need an adopter who is comfortable with slow, consistent socialization and understands that her progress may take time. Other Fun Facts Chillin is quiet, curious, and independent. She has made encouraging progress while living with other cats, spending more time down on the floor and engaging with her feline roommates instead of staying exclusively up high. She may not become a lap cat, but with patience, she has the opportunity to continue gaining confidence and discovering the joys of having a safe home. >

KNOWN HISTORY:: Chillin was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on her behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/08/26 FB61 Sitting upright in front of cubby upon approach, ears forward, face tense and tail curled around feet. She slowly backs away as I open the cubby door. I offer her treats and she avoids eye contact while remaining tense. I speak to her softly and close the kennel door, only then does she eat the treats offered. Needs more time - will continue to build positive associations. 6/11/26 FB79 At the top of the kennel, Chillin is perched with his paws tucked and his eyes wide/dilated; she watched me closely for further movement and when the tool was slowly brought in she stood in a crouched position with his back arched and his ears tilted. Chillin ducked and dodged the tool for a few moments but very briefly tolerated the tool being ran down his back before he darted to the front near her food bowls with hereyes flat as he watched closely. 6/16/26 FB25 Chillin is inside of a box without the top. I use the stairs to be able to see in at him, and she is looking up at me with a neutral expression and body. He returns a few slow blinks. I place squeeze up on the scratcher tool and slide it into the kennel toward him. I put a little on the edge of the box with it. He leans up to sniff, seemingly curious, then flinches away when the scratcher gets too close. She stands up and arches his back, then hops out of the box and retreats to the ledge, lip licking. I leave her with extra treats. 6/18/26 FB79 At the top of the kennel, Chillin sits with her tail wrapped around her legs, her ears forward and her eyes wide which dilate when i enter the kennel and greet her. She had no reaction as i spoke however when i reached in with the tool for her to sniff she flinched back. Chillin remained still/tolerant for brief pets on her head but quickly pulled away while trying to back herself further into the corner. When the tool was ran down and around her back/body she tensed up with her shoulders hunching as she ducked and dodged to avoid contact. I didn't push further contact since she didnt attempt to retreat away and remained at the top. 6/29/26 FB25 Chillin is inside of her box today. On the stepping stool, I'm able to see inside where she is sitting upright, looking up and watching me with wide eyes and forward ears, her whiskers twitching. I place squeeze up on the edge of the box and she sniffs the air but makes no movement toward it. When I bring the scratcher tool toward her head, she flinches back harshly, but settles and then sniffs it. She lip-licks and then jumps out to the ledge, pressing herself farther away from me. I talk softly to her and leave her with some extra treats. 7/8/26 FB58 Sitting in her box with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated - she pokes her head up and hisses, jumping up onto the shelf and sits hunched with her tail wrapped around herself. She sniffs at the tuna cup, steps back before she sits with eyes wide, wary about treats tossed but eats and returns slow blinks w/ door closed. GA

Potential challenges comments:: Chillin came from a home with many other cats, it is likely that she was not appropriately socialized to humans. 8/6/26 Upon meeting with her again for a monthly re-evaluation, Chillin has been living in the Free Roam Room with other cats for about a month (since 7/11) and has begun to spend a lot more time down on the floor and spending time with the other cats during the day when staff is around. Previously, she spent a majority of her time almost exclusively up in the top area of the cat tree. She displays more curiousity but remains avoidant and jumpy with petting or attempts to make contact with her. It cannot be guaranteed that Chillin will ever be fully socialized or at what speed her progress will take. Those interested in her must be willing to commit to consistent socialization techniques but must remember to move at her pace.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 6/7/26 Chillin is on the top part of the kennel, laying with a neutral face and body and loose tail; however, when the assessor entered the kennel, she tensed up, wrapped her tail and her eyes widen/dilated. She had no interest in the treats that were tossed as she flinched harshly, her ears tilted and sat up quickly. When the tool was slowly brought in, she began to harshly duck and dodged the tool to avoid contact. When the tool was used to pet her head, her ears flattened and as it ran down and around her body, she snapped back and bit the tool. Chillin remained with a very tense body and wide eyes as she watches closely for further moment. The assessor waited a moment before attempting contact again and once again Chillin snapped her head to bite the tool. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 7/7/26 As the assessor approaches, Chillin is in her box. Once she views the assessor she jumps on to the kennel shelf. She has wide dilated eyes and a stiff body with her tail wrapped around herself. When offered some push up treat on a tool she does not react and continues to watch the assessor. The assessor touches Chillin on her face and neck lightly with a tool, she flinches. She does not allow touch on her back with the tool, she gives a light hiss and slightly raises her arm. The interaction is ended, a tray of push up treat is left for her. 8/8/26 Upon re-eval, Chillin is sitting at the window in the free roam room and engaging with one of her roommates, Kiki, as she sits with a mostly neutral face and body. However, as the assessor approaches and she notices, her eyes widen and her face and body tense as she lowers down on the window ledge and looks around to identify a way around the assessor. The assessor then opens a squeeze up and all of thee other cats in the room then swarm as they innocently seek out some treats, and Chillin is blocked into the window. The assessor is able to make contact with the scratcher tool and she jumps the first time she is touched, and the turns to look at the tool and shrinks away when pet again. When the rest of the cats are distracted by treats in another area, she moves onto a bed and the assessor drops some treats near her from a distance so that she doesn't run. Chillin is an adult cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She is very apprehensive of people and she attempts to flee and avoid human contact. It is difficult to predict if she will respond to socialization but we recommend offering high value treats and food to help build a positive association to humans. Please be mindful that older cats will require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
