Animal Profile

Taki

Hello, my name is Taki. My animal id is #209231. I am a desexed male gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/3/2024.

Taki is at risk due to behavior concerns. He often pancakes or refuses to walk in unfamiliar or open areas. While he can be leashed and handled, he has shown arousal-related behaviors, fearfulness, and leash biting, as well as catching onto handlers' clothing during heightened states. However, Taki also demonstrates moments of sociability, leaning into handlers for attention when approached slowly. Medically taki is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. A volunteer writes: Takis are one of my top favorite snacks, and though we just met, I think Taki could easily be one of my favorite dogs. Look at him wiggle when you come to his kennel, excited for time away from his kennel! He takes full advantage of his time out, engaging in what I imagine are some of his favorite activities. Snuggles - he leans in and moves around to make sure we get the right spots. And even though he's on leash and the conditions are not ideal, he does not let they stop him from playing enthusiastically as if he was not on a leash at all. Once he's exhausted himself he sits back down for head rubbins. Taki was brought in after conflict with a puppy in the home he was in. He was trembling and nervous in his dog greeting at the shelter so a home without dogs is likely ideal for him.

Summary:: Due to Taki entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 10/30/24 Taki is introduced to a novel male dog while off-leash at the care center. Taki doesn't greet the novel male dog at the gate, exploring away from it. The novel male dog is escorted inside to greet Taki face-to-face. Taki becomes immediately stiff, displaying wide eyes. Taki begins low growling, and it intensifies, quickly being moved away and returned to kennel before any form of escalation. 10/09/24 Taki is introduced to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Taki greets the greeter dog with a neutral frame. Taki is taken to greet her face-to-face. Taki now nervous being within the same vicinity as the female greeter dog. Taki will self-handicap by displaying paw raises, while also lip-licking excessively. Taki will give the greeter dog side-eyes as she sniffs his genitals, trembling in the process. Taki's tail is extremely tucked and remains completely still, visibly looking extremely uncomfortable, until the female greeter dog creates distance. Taki is returned to his kennel.

Summary (3):: 12/2/24: Taki was resting on his bed as handlers approached his kennel. He slowly stretched his legs out as he approached the front door to his kennel. He was able to be leashed and slowly walked on leash to the play yard. He started becoming nervous in the play yard by and was shaking and bowing his head down a lot. He pulled on the way back to his kennel and went right in with no issues. 11/24: Taki was observed to get aroused during a walk and began leash biting. While jumping up to leash bite, he caught the sleeve of the handler's clothing. He finally bit and held onto the leash and he was walked back to the building while he was still holding onto the lead. 11/23/24: Taki greets the handler lying on his cot in the back of the kennel. As the handler opens the kennel door, Taki approaches with a loose frame. Taki is easily leashed and escorted out of the building to the play yards. When on a drag leash Taki will explore the yard scenting. The handler offers treats which Taki refuses, investigating but ultimately not taking. When the handler kneels down Taki approaches cautiously, with a tucked tail and ears pinned. Taki allows the handler to pet him on his chin, head and back. Taki continues to explore scenting, paw some times raised and shaking. The handler begins to escort Taki back to the care center but when passing other dogs, Taki attempts to pancake in avoidance. The handler attempts coaxing, makin themselves smaller as well as going in different directions, Taki stays still. The handler manages to Taki going when near the gate of the building. Capitalizing on Taki's movement the handler successfully escorts Taki back to the care center, to his kennel and unleashes him with any issues.

Summary (4):: 11/16/24: Taki is at the back of his kennel standing and staring at the handler with a neutral body and slow tail wag. Taki is easily leashed and taken out for a street walk where he panting, eyes are very red as well as along is eyes with a red hue and will not walk towards the street. Taki is coaxed towards the street, and will pancake and refuse to walk, and will only walk along the fence line. Taki is walked down the street where he continues to hug the fence line/wall across the entire walk and when coaxed across the street, will not cross and will begin to pancake, having to be brought along the fence line again. Taki is walked back into his kennel with no issue. 11/10/24: Taki is standing in the middle of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulls mildly to the Canine Behavior Office. Taki is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. Taki is loose and social with handler throughout and will readily approach, leaning into handler for attention. Taki engages with multiple enrichment items including a snuffle mat and licky mat. After his session, Taki is returned to kennel safely. 11/2/24: Taki is at the back of his kennel sleeping when the he is approached. Taki wakes up once the handler slowly opens his door and is easily leashed to be brought out to a street walk. Taki is neutral bodied but when outside, maintains a low body and slightly tucked tail. Taki will soften when crouched down to his level, leaning in for petting and displacement stretching in-between. Taki does not pull and walks on a loose leash throughout his walk, exploring the surrounding areas and using the bathroom. Taki will walk back to the care center and only walks if he is walking alongside the fence line back to the shelter, Taki will pancake and refuse to walk if walked away from the fence line. Taki is brought back to kennel with no issue, and immediately lays back down on his bed. 10/30/24: Taki’s is lying down in the back of his kennel and will be leashed with ease, When his handler approaches, he initially remains at the back of the kennel and slowly makes his way forward, indicating mild wariness rather than eagerness. At the play-pen gate, Taki shows little interest in the other dog, a subtle sign of hesitation or discomfort with socializing closely. Once the other dog enters, Taki will low growl reflecting a defensive warning, signaling a need for space. However, Taki cooperates easily with his handler and avoids any further escalation, suggesting he is uncomfortable but not confrontational. Gradual social introductions could help Taki become more comfortable with other dogs. Taki will be brought back into the care center and returned to his kennel safely.

Summary (5):: 10/23/24: As handler 1 arrived at care center Taki was observed planting his feet and refusing to walk while returning from a walk with handler 2. Handler 1 crouched down and attempted to verbally coax Taki down the street. Handler 1 advised Taki was only interested in going in the opposite direction. Due to not having treats on hand and Taki not responding to gentle leash pressure, handler 1 asked handler 2 if they were comfortable carrying him inside. After a few pets to test his consent/comfortability, handler 2 picked Taki up without issue. Taki appeared comfortable in handler 2's arms and was carried back to kennel. 10/19/24: Taki was taken out on a little break to help ease his mind. When approaching his kennel, he displayed loose body and wagging tail. No signs of overstimulation or arousal. He sporadically got a bit nervous when walking throughout the halls due to the loud noises and would try to lay on the floor. Handler gave him his favorite snacks to help walk him through quickly and he was good to go. Taki was very observant and loved to play. Handler let him walk around the room and allowed him to get comfortable. He enjoyed being around people and loved all the belly rubs. Handler sat down with Taki and fed him some spam while he warmed up. He demonstrated a few commands like "sit" and "wait". When returning him back to his kennel, he walked through the halls smoothly. He wasn't nervous at all. 10/15/24: Taki is standing in kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. He comes to the front slowly and handler uses a treat to lure him through the leash. He walks neutrally to the play yard where handler attaches a drag leash. Taki leans into contact and accepts pets on his head, neck and back. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 10/15/24 Staff member reports while in play-yard with Taki, when petting him, he will become too aroused and attempt to mount. When attempting to take back to kennel, Taki grabs the drag leash and growls. The staff member manages to leash them with their slip lead and return them back to kennel.

Summary (6):: 10/15/24: A staff member reported Taki had made attempts to mount them. 10/14/24: Taki was peering over the frosted glass with an appeasement grin as handler unlocked kennel. He was leashed with ease and walked calmly through the bubbles from the bubble machine. Handler noticed Taki's kennel was unsoiled and he relieved himself once out of kennel. Taki pulled in the direction of the exit so handler took him out to the yard. Taki was social with handler and would approach whenever they crouched and called him over. Taki accepted pets on his chest and would lean into scratches on his lower back. Taki continued to loosen up over time and he gave a play bow when it was time to leave the pen. Taki was returned to kennel with ease. 10/08/24: Taki comes slowly to the front of his kennel with a tense body and pinned ears as the handler approaches. He wags his tail once and allows the handler to lure him through the leash. Taki tiptoes with a tense body up to the play yard. He sees another dog and tenses, hard staring and watching the other dog intently. He is led to the play yard where he continues to tiptoe. He sniffs around the yard but shows no interest in treats. Handler kneels down and Taki approaches slowly, wagging his tail. He accepts contact and gives intermittent tail wags. Taki re-initiates contact when the handler pauses, but remains tense and keeps his head turned away from the handler. Taki begins to lean into contact towards the end of the interaction. Taki is easily re-leashed and shakes off, walking with a softer body and bouncier gate back to kennel. He enters the kennel without issue

Summary (7):: 9/26/24: Taki is the sweetest boy ever. He's a tad bit nervous when opening the kennel but after a few seconds he warms up, his body loosens and he walks right up to you! His favorite treats are spam and chicken chunks! He loves spam and will patiently wait for you to give him some. He takes them nice and slow. When taking Taki out, he is very observant and easy to handle. Overall, Taki is such a gentle boy. 09/24/2024: Taki began to leash biting with an ACS while they waiting for his kennel to be cleaned after coming back from a walk. The ACS is assisted by the behavior team . Taki did not respond to treats and toys offered to him. Taki is taken to the behavior office where he continues to leash bite in the room, salivating, displaying red eyes, and heavy panting. Taki began to jump on the ACS and mount while biting on the drag lead. He leashed on a slip lead and was quickly taken to his kennel due to arousal behavior. 9/8/24: Taki is at the back of his kennel when the handler approaches, and slowly makes his way to the front of the door full appeasement grinning with a soft tail wag. Taki is clipped by his collar and brought to the behavior office where he nestles near the handler with a low body but fast wagging tail. Taki leans his head into the handler for petting, and the handler finds a spot that Taki really likes and begins to lean more intensely into the handler for them to continue. This goes on for another ten minutes of petting, but loosens his body a lot more and begins to flip over on his belly for petting. Taki once getting ready to go back to his kennel is a lot looser, wiggling his rear and relieving stress through panting. He is taken back to his kennel with no issue. 9/4/24: Taki was lying in kennel when handler approached. He turned his head to look at handler but did not stand up, displaying FAS with wide eyes and trembling. A large dog in a neighboring kennel was barking very loudly, so handler stepped one foot into kennel to place slip leash over Taki's head to remove him from the kennel room quickly as he appeared frozen. Once leashed, handler verbally coaxed him out and he walked to the BA room for his assessment. Taki had a tucked tail and crouched posture upon entering the room and did not take high value treats. Taki appeared to seek comfort from handler by staying close to them and eventually sitting on their foot or leaning his weight into them. Taki frequently approached handler and solicited pets all over, burrowing his head into their lap. Taki warmed up after some time in the room and attempted to mount handler a number of times. He was returned to kennel with ease where he immediately began eating his dinner.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Taki high level of fear we recommend he is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks- We recommend he is placed as the only pet in the home and no dog parks due to a bite towards another dog in the prior home.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- During Taki handling assessment he began to body block, hover the assessor toy displaying a tense body making huffing noises. it is essential to work on desensitizing him to having his possessions handled by using techniques like trading up for higher-value items and practicing "drop it" and "leave it". Please see handout on Resource guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control- Taki displays poor impulse control by jumping on handlers,These behaviors suggest a need for consistent training to improve her manners and impulse control. Using positive reinforcement and redirection will help manage these behaviors effectively. Please see handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/Anxiety- To address his fearfulness, gradual desensitization and counter-conditioning, especially around crates and new environments, will build his confidence. Please see the handout on the Decompression period and generalized anxiety. Bite history (dog)- owner stated that Taki bit the 3mos old puppy in the home on his nose, leaving behind a puncture wound. She was unable to describe the events prior to the bite. Leash-biting- Taki has displayed leash biting in care Low threshold for arousal- Taki dispays arousla behavior in care leash bitng and mounting on handlers.
