I came into the shelter as a returns on 2/2/2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving - no pets allowed.

Kory is at risk for behavioral reasons. He is very nervous and overwhelmed in the shelter, allowing minimal handling. Medically, we have no concerns for Kory, who presents as a healthy dog.

Animal was rolling and yelping on lead. Bleeding from mouth (possibly bit tongue). Placed straight in kennel to avoid stress. DVM exam and Vx in a.m. on To Do list.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 3 yr Microchip noted on Intake? no Microchip Number (If Applicable): History : Owner surrender Subjective: Observed Behavior - Very scared, panics when being walked on leash and flails to get away, urinated and defecated all over when trying to put on scale. With slow quiet movements was able to approach and place muzzle. Then was able to be handled. No sedation required for exam. Evidence of Cruelty seen - No Evidence of Trauma seen - No Objective T = P = WNL R = WNL BCS 2.5/5 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: Difficult to assess teeth due to muzzle but front teeth appear clean mm pink PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: MI, sst MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: Mentation appropriate - no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: Assessment: Nervous but apparently healthy Prognosis: excellent Plan: neuter SURGERY: Okay for surgery

Kori was very stiff bodied during intake he was backing away and would hide under his owner the entire time. He did not allow me to collar him or pick him up. He did allow me to pet him and scratch his head when he was in the kennel.

Basic Information:: Kori is a brown and white male small breed dog that is estimated to be 3 Years old. His previous owner got him as a gift 3 years ago and stayed with them until they had to move to a new home that did not allow animals.

How is this dog around strangers?: Kori is friendly around strangers. He will approach them and sniff around them for a few minutes until he gets comfortable.
How is this dog around children?: Kori was not around children in his previous home but was friendly to children he met during his walks.
How is this dog around other dogs?: Kori lived with another dog at home and was very friendly with him, they would often share toys and sleep in the same bed.
How is this dog around cats?: Kori was not around cats in his previous home.
Resource guarding:: Kori tends to growl at people that go near his food but is not bothered by people taking his toys.
Bite history:: Kori has no history of having bitten another person or animal

Energy level/descriptors:: High Energy, Affectionate, Playful
Other Notes:: Kori tends to destroy pillows and stuffed toys at home and barks when he hears loud noises. He enjoys baths and being brushed for a short period of time before he tries to walk away. He is also not bothered by people trying to trim his nails. Kori is used to sleeping on the bed and when you try to push him off he will keep trying to jump back up on the bed.

For a New Family to Know: Kori is an affectionate dog that enjoys to lay down and cuddle with people on the couch. He enjoys playing with stuffed toys and balls. Kori prefers being indoors most of the day and eating a mix of wet and dry food. He is very house trained and has never has accidents at home. He enjoys going out for brisk walks and does not pull on the leash.

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Kory is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Kory has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Kory's previous owner notes that he may growl when his food bowl is approached. We recommend that Beatty be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Kory's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games.
