Shelby
Hello, my name is Shelby. My animal id is #221740. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/5/2025.
Shelby is currently at risk due to behavior concerns. When Shelby first arrived at the care center, she was hard barking, snarling and lunging towards handlers. In one instance, she made contact with a staff members pant leg. With time, treats and a slow approach, Shelby now greets handlers with a soft body. She has shown some reactivity towards other dogs, focusing on them during walks, and has begun to dig at the kennel walls. Medically, Shelby is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals.

Summary (7):: 3/7/25: (PM) Shelby was sitting at the front of her kennel when handler approaches. Handler calls her name and she begins to start barking, the leash was shown and she was easily leashed. She begins to pull hard out of the room and is taken for a street walk. While on the street she switches between pulling moderately/hard. She pulls hard towards trees for sniffing and doesn’t respond to any stimuli. She’s then clipped and returned back to her kennel with no issue. 3/7/25: When handler approaches Shelby’s kennel, she begins to hard bark, lunge & snarl at the handler with a tense body. Handler attempts to coax her with treats and meats and she wasn’t receptive to them at all. Handler then walks away briefly to decrease FAS. Handler later on approaches Shelby’s kennel with cheese-spray and she is easily coaxed and becomes soft and wiggly. Shelby was now at the front of her kennel standing on her back hind-legs. A treat was then tossed in the kennel and Shelby wasn’t interested. Handler attempted to use a treat lure with a very wide loop, which was successful. Shelby then attempted to push her way out of the kennel and proceeded to pull hard on her way out the room and once out in the play-yard she began to pull hard towards different spots to sniff. Once in the pen she immediately relieved herself, she then approached the handler with a soft body soliciting pets behind her ear. However after a few minuets she is able to settle in the crate and lay down. Only barking intermittently to the sounds outside of the office.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Shelby so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Shelby has been observed to become tense, and hover over toys that are in her possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Shelby's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Shelby displayed hard barking, snarling, lunging and attempted to bite a staff member during her intake. She displayed a softer body when offered high value treats. Positive reinforcement should be used to help her associate new people with things she likes such as treats and toys. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
