What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

No Dog Parks: Due to the potential for redirection, we recommend no trips to the dog park. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Princess' previous owner states that she is fearful of loud noises. During her assessment she was noted to head whip, show whale eye, and lip lick during contact. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Princess would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Princess' previous owner states that she is anxious in the home. If Princess displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: During intake, Princess was observed to be screeching while on leash. Recently, Princess has been observed to be highly kennel reactive. Noted to pull hard towards the other dogs and in one instance, almost redirected (nipped) onto the handler. Princess will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Arousal: During intake Princess was observed to be aroused. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Princess to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors. Please see handout on Arousal.
