Aries
Hello, my name is Aries. My animal id is #230117. I am a male red dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 4 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/2/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormAries is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived with a limited history, his finder states that he is highly dog reactive. They reported Aries will hard bark, growl, lunge, and snap towards other dogs. They also noted him to be friendly and outgoing with both strangers and children. During his intake , he was observed to pant, pace, bark and was lunging towards handlers. Throughout his stay Aries has been observed to have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to jump towards handlers with an open mouth and will begin to leash bite. In a recent incident, Aries bit a handlers finger with high pressure as the kennel lock was unlocked. Medically, Aries is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on DOG so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and a low threshold for arousal we recommend an experienced adult only home. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking, growling, lunging, and snapping towards dogs we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Aries' finder states that he will jump up on strangers and people that he knows. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Mouthiness: Aries' finder states that he will take treats roughly and is very mouthy. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Aries puts teeth on skin. They should be rewarded with attention and treats when they stop and/or when they are seeking attention in alternate ways. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Aries is reported to bite a handler of the finger when they went to remove move the lock on his kennel. This bite did not result in broken skin but was with hard pressure. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Aries to new and unfamiliar situations. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Separation Anxiety/ Anxiety: Aries' finder states that he has generalized anxiety (paces, whines, and is unable to settle) and is anxious when left alone. During his assessment and during intake Aries was observed to pant and pance. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. They would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Aries' finder states that he will hard bark, lunge, growl, and snap towards dogs. During his stay Aries has been observed to pull hard towards people with a tense body and lunged towards the sound of a dog barking. Aries will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Arousal/ Leash Biting: Aries has been observed to very quickly become over aroused. Noted to jump towards the handler with an open mouth and begin to leash bite. Aries should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Aries. Please see handout on Arousal. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
