Mumbo Jumbo
Hello, my name is Mumbo Jumbo. My animal id is #266967. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/1/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMumbo Jumbo is at risk due to behavior concerns. During his time in the care center Mumbo jumbo has shown high levels of fear, potential for defensive aggression. During a recent walk Mumbo Jumbo fixated on a handler. Treats were only able to momentarily distract him before he moved towards the handler growling, snapping and jumping up at the leash. He had to be straight armed but continued aiming at the leash snarling and growling baring teeth and then jumped again aiming towards the handler's face. Mumbo Jumbo is noted to check in with handlers during walks. Medically, Mumbo Jumbo is apparently healthy.

Summary:: Mumbo Jumbo has been observed to have high potential for defensive aggression, out of concern for his overall stress level, an assessment will not be attempted at this time.
Summary (5):: 10/6/26 - Mumbo Jumbo is at the front of his kennel when handler approaches, he gives a low tail wag and body is neutral but does tense up and whale-eyes when handler opens the door with the leash, handler is able to leash him and exit him out of kennel. When outside he walks with strong pulling, sniffing and pulling the handler, handler tries to call him and use verbal cues but he turns to stare at handler with whale-eyes before continuing on with the walk and isn't receptive to any treats. Walk continues, at one point he relieves himself and handler reaches down to pick up after him, he begins to pull on the leash, at that moment he tenses up and whale-eyes lightly biting the leash, handler quickly picks up after him and continues the walk. At the corner where handler tosses the trash, handler turns to take him back to the building, Mumbo is walking at first before he tenses and turns fixating on the handler, handler tosses treats to distract him but he then moves forward at the handler and handler backs up tossing treats in which at this point he growls and snaps jumping up at the leash. Handler holds leash out but he continues to jump up aiming at the leash snarling and growling baring teeth and then jumps again aiming towards the handler's face. Handler tosses treats and toys but he doesn't react, handler quickly wraps his leash around a lamppost and requests assistance. Second handler comes to double leash him and bring him back to kennel where handlers use a hook to remove leashes.
Summary (6):: 10/5/26 - Mumbo Jumbo is at the back of his kennel when handler approaches, he had a timid body, ducked head, handler opens the door and is able to leash him with ease, exits the building fine. When handler is outside with him he is sniffing and pulling mildly, he isn't receptive to treats, does walk forward when handler speaks in soft tone coaxing him. At one point the second handler there pulls out a treat to give to him, Mumbo softens at first sniffing the treat and then tenses up whale-eyeing, handler pulls him away to redirect him, he does check in with the handler at times but whenever handler pulls out treats to hand to him he whale-eyes and continues walking otherwise doesn't care much for the handler and focuses on sniffing his surroundings. Returning back to kennel he did baulk and second handler uses a leash as a belly band for him to get picked up into the kennel. 10/04/26 - Mumbo Jumbo is at the back of his kennel when handler approaches with timid body, ducking his head, handler opens the door and attempts to leash with treats but he whale-eyes and avoids the leash and doesn't respond to the treats. Handler used the fish pole slip lead to leash him slowly and switch to handler's regular kennel rope, handler does all this slowly and he exits the kennel slowly. He does not react to any dogs or people while exiting the building. During his outside walk he maintains a loose leash, has a timid body while exploring his surroundings and sniffing, does tense and look up at handler when handler calls for him and sniffs handler but does not take treats/isn't receptive to treats then goes back to focusing on his walk and sniffing. The more the walk continues the looser his body becomes, when seeing a dog in the distance he tenses up and stares for a moment but is easily redirected by handler with verbal noises and coaxing him to walk. He is fine when returning to the building and easy to unleash with no further issues
Summary (7):: 10/02/26: Mumbo Jumbo is at the back of his kennel when the handler approaches. He slowly gets up and approaches the front of the kennel while handler unlocks the door. He sniffs offered treats and gently takes them. He allows handler to put the leash on and exits the kennel. Mumbo Jumbo walks alongside the handler through the hallway and shows no reaction to other dogs or staff members. He is taken to the yard, where he relieves himself. Mumbo then begins exploring the pen and sniffing around the perimeter. He maintains an alert body with wide eyes, and face tension with visible forehead wrinkles. When handler attempts to engage him with pattern games and a licki mat, he does not pay attention to the enrichment; instead continues scanning his surroundings and repeatedly moving around the pen. Due to his kennel being cleaned, handler takes him to the street to give additional time outside. During the walk, Mumbo Jumbo remains primarily focused on sniffing and investigating specific areas and shows no reaction to passing stimuli, including dogs or people. He walks with mild leash tension while moving forward and continues maintaining a slightly lowered body. During return handler pre-clips the leash; while approaching the kennel Mumbo Jumbo retreats and has to be muscled in. Handler is able to get the leash back after with no issues 10/1/26: Mumbo Jumbo is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body; as the handler opens the kennel door, he attempts to squeeze his head through, but the handler slightly closes the door. Mumbo is leashed and brought out the room. The handler walks Mumbo in the yard; he sniffs around the pen and the handler. when the handler attempts to get his attention, Mumbo briefly shows interest. Mumbo doesn't react to any handlers or dogs being walked past. He also relieves himself a few times; after sniffing near the handler, he nearly relieves himself on them, but the handler moves away. The handler walks Mumbo around the perimeter and brings him inside. As they approach his kennel, Mumbo refuses to enter; the handler tosses treats into his kennel, but he shows no interest. The handler makes a few attempts and muscles him into kennel. The handler removes their leash with ease, but Mumbo stays at the front of his kennel; (he may have quickly bared teeth). The handler distracts Mumbo with treats, removes the lock from the kennel bars, and lock his kennel. Mumbo is heavy panting as the handler walks away

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Mumbo Jumbo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
