Bite history:: 6/30/26 Officers arrived at around 10:55 PM and met with George's owner. They stated that George has an ear infection in both ears and they were using a tool to help clean it. They were on the couch when the incident happened. After cleaning one ear, the owner was cleaning the other one when they accidentally pushed the tool too deep. George reacted and bit the owner on the left forearm. This was a bite and release, which resulted in puncture wounds. The owner's partner was sitting right next to them on the couch and tried to interfere. After the bite, George flailed a bit and scratched the partner, but no skin was broken. After the incident, George ran into a bedroom. The owner was able to lock George in the bedroom before going to the hospital for treatment. When officers arrived, they were able to grab George by the collar, leash him, and place him inside a crate without issue.

Summary (5):: 7/24/26: George is at the front of his kennel with a soft body; the handler observes a puddle of saliva in the back of his kennel. He is easily leashed and brought out of the kennel; the handler tosses treats on the ground and George eats them before walking out the room. On the street, George walks ahead with mild leash tension; he doesn't react to people or dogs. George often looks back at the handler with soft eyes; he allows pets and takes treats with mild pressure. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks George inside his kennel; he frantically pulls hard and looks at the neighboring kennels, but enters his own. After the handler removes their leash, George begins to lick his kennel bars. 7/23/26: George is at the front of his kennel with neutral body when the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. He follows prepared treat trail on the ground and exits the room with no issues. George passing other dogs in pop-up crates with no reactivity and sits next to the handler in elevator. He gently takes offered treats and continues sitting next to them. Once outside George walks slowly next to the handler on the loose leash with no tension. He sniffs certain spots and eventually relieves himself. He is not interested in any interaction with handler and remains aloof. George doesn't react towards other dogs or people passerby. His body remains neutral with soft face during the walk. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and George goes back into his kennel by his own.

Summary (6):: 7/21/26 (PM): George is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body; he also has saliva under his mouth. The handler lures him with treats and leashes him as he eats them. Before exiting, the handler presents treats to George and he shows interest. While walking out the room, the handler tosses treats on the ground; George eats some of the treats and walks out the room. while waiting for the elevator, George jumps on the handler with a loose body; in the elevator, george sits on command and takes them softly. Before exiting, George pulls towards a small dog that another handler is holding, but the handler pulls him away. George is brought out onto the street, but baulks in place; he pulls back into the building due to the heavy rain. the handler walks George back upstairs. He walks past every dog in crates normally, but as the last dog react to him, George pulls towards and makes contact with the crate; the handler quickly pulls him away. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks George to his kennel. 7/21/26: As the initial handler approaches George’s kennel he is at the front with widened eyes, a neutral body & heavily licking the kennel bars. (There is also a puddle of saliva in the kennel) As the handler goes to unlock the kennel, George would begin to jump onto the kennel bars. He is then leashed and removed from kennel, once handler gets past a few kennels George then quickly jumps up and snaps at the handler's face. He is then muscled away and he quickly jumps back up for the rope. A second handler quickly tosses another rope and George is then double roped and is walked back to his kennel. While on the double leash, George would begin to flail and thrash slightly. He is then muscled into his kennel and a hook is used to safely remove the leashes. Interaction was then ended and George went back to licking his kennel bars and pacing back and forth.

Summary (7):: 7/18/26: George is at the front of his kennel with a soft body; he is easily leashed and brought out the kennel. While exiting, George turns around and jumps on the handler exuberantly; the handler straight arms the leash and tosses treats onto the ground; George eats the treats as he walks out the room. On the street, George walks with mild leash tension, but turns to look back in the shelter's direction; the handler calls his name and applies gentle leash pressure, and he continues to walk. George allows pets on his head and gives paw on demand. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks George to his kennel; he eats the treats on the ground and pulls to a dog in the adjacent kennel. The handler pulls him away and brings George into his kennel. After he is returned, George licks his kennel bars. 7/12/26 (Assessment): George was at front of kennel jumping up and down on the kennel door. Handler had to make a few attempts to leash before being able to take him for a brief street walk before his assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). While om his walk he walked next to handler, occasionally lightly pulling. George stopped a few times and had to be encouraged by handler to continue. He displayed no reactivity to people. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 7/8/26: It was noted on the whiteboard that George knows the commands "paw" and "down". 7/1/26: George is lying down in the back of his kennel, and as the handler speaks to him with a soft voice, he stands up and approaches the front with a neutral body and wagging tail. As the handler attempts to leash him, he pushes his head at the bottom of the kennel door; the handler leashes George and brings him out the room. The handler walks George to the yard; there he sniffs around and relieves himself. George shows no interest in the handler, as they present him a treat and their hand to sniff, but he ignores them. The handler walks George around the perimeter, which he does with mild leash tension. The handler brings George inside and attempts to walk past his room to go to the office, but he baulks; as they get closer, he baulks once more, but with leash tension, he walks into the office. The handler presents cheese spray, and George sniffs but doesn't eat. When an unfamiliar handler enters the room. george approaches them with a soft body and wagging tail; he doesn't eat the treat that is offered. he also licks their hand when presented. After a few minutes, the handler clips their leash and returns George to his kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on George so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite history we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: George has been observed to balk while on leash. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. George would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Leash Biting/ Arousal: During the job portion of the assessment, George began jumping up towards the leash. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach George to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors.
