Puti
Hello, my name is Puti. My animal id is #265884. I am a female bronze dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 9/19/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - owner elderly.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormPuti is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Puti was brought to the care center following a bite incident in the home. Her previous owner reported recent "aggressive behavior" but did not go further into detail. In the previous home a bite incident occurred when a familiar person was hugging Puti. This was a bite to the forehead that did break skin. In the care center, Puti has been observed to be highly social with handlers and receptive to treats with a loose body. Recently Puti has begun to show signs of stress while in her kennel, such as biting the kennel bars. Medically, Puti is apparently healthy.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility with no owner notes, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 10/7/26: Puti is introduced to a novel intact male and is neutral at the fence with high wags. She sniffs nose to nose and toe taps, then paws at the fence. She is let into the yard and sniffs independently and uses the bathroom. She greets the other dog with high wags and a tense body with hackles raised. She lip licks when nose to nose, then loosens and begins toe tapping and bouncing. She gives partial play bows and leaps towards the other dog. The two stand on their hind legs and Puti is tense with hackles raised and a closed mouth, giving an air snap nearby the other dog. They are separated and Puti engages with her handler, not reapproaching.
Summary (5):: 10/20/26: Puti is observed to lick and gnaw on her kennel bars while the room is active. 10/19/26: Puti is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she is react to and jumping toward a neighboring dog who is similarly jumping and reacting to her through the kennel bars. She is distracted by handler with a treat and removed from kennel following a treat treat tossed by handler. She is taken to the street for her walk. Outside she pulls moderately and stops to sniff frequently, Puti accepts treats with mild to moderate pressure and passes people and dogs without issue. She walks for a bit before being brought back inside to the behavior office for her assessment, once complete she is returned to kennel following a tossed treat. 10/16/26: Puti is at the front of her kennel jumping up and barking in demanding manner when handler approaches. She is easily leashed with treats and willingly exits the kennel. She passes neighboring dogs with no interest and continues following the handler in the hallways. Once in elevator, she jumps exuberantly onto the handler seeking attention. She starts showing tail wags when handler is petting her. Once outside she starts pulling toward the gates and eventually relieves herself. She continues walking alongside the handler with no pulling. She is social and frequently looks back at them for check-ins. She allows petting and leans onto the handler for additional attention. She has no reaction to any stimuli on the street. She remains loose body and is focused on the handler. Upon return handler clips the leash and brings Puti back into her kennel with no further issues.
Summary (6):: 10/7/26 [playgroup]: Puti is lying down in the back of her kennel, and stands up with a neutral body; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. Puti allows pets from the handler and brings her outside for playgroup (see D2D notes); afterwards, Puti is returned to her kennel with ease. 10/4/26 (Assessment): Puti was lying down at the back of her kennel. When handler unlocked kennel she came forward with a neutral body where she was easily leashed and taken for a brief street walk before her assessment (Please see assessment notes for details). Outside Puti displayed no reactivity to the dogs and people she saw and passed on the street. She accepted treats with a soft mouth. After her assessment she was returned to her kennel with no issue. 9/30/26 [late entry]: Puti is in front of her kennel with loose body when handler approaches. She starts showing wagging tail while handler is unlocking the kennel. She is easily leashed and readily exits the kennel. She walks with mild pulling all the way out of the room and through the hallways. She has no reaction to other dogs or staff members around. Once outside she starts pulling toward different spots to sniff and eventually relieves herself. Puti is social and follows the handler in the driveway. She has no reaction to any stimuli, and she is focused on the handler. Puti follows verbal cues and gently takes treats. She exuberantly jumps onto the handler. Her body is loose with relaxed face. She allows petting and leans onto the handler for additional attention. Upon return handler clips the leash and bring Puti back into her kennel with ease. 09/21/26: Puti is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she is leashed without issue while distracted with a treat and is taken to the yard for her walk. Outside Puti sniffs around the yards perimeter and follows handler, ignoring dogs in neighboring yards and walking with handler, accepting treats and walking without issue uneventfully for a while. After relieving herself, Puti is brought back inside and allows handler to clip her leash before Puti is returned to kennel without issue.
Summary (7):: 9/20/26 (AM): Puti is at the front of her kennel, pawing at the kennel door; she is panting and displays wide eyes (room is loud). She is receptive to treats and is distracted while handler is unlocking the kennel. She is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. She exits the room following the handler with lowered body due to other dogs barking but has no reactivity toward them. She walks with light pulling toward the yard and has no reaction to pop-up crates or staff members. Once she gets outside she immediately relieves herself and enters the pen. She starts sniffing around and relieves herself few more times. She is frequently scanning her surroundings and remains open-mouth panting. Handler attempts to get her attention with recall; she looks back and comes closer. She tolerates petting but quickly disengages without seeking additional attention. When another dog is entering neighboring pen, Puti starts sniffing the fence between pens and after moves closer to the handler. Her hackles are raised and she hard stares at the dog but does not attempt to lunge, vocalize or approach closer. She is not responsive to verbal cues or treats. Handler is able to pull her away with light leash tension and she disengages, following the handler. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Puti back into her kennel with no further issues. 9/19/26 (PM): Puti is at the front of her kennel, jumping up repeatedly with a neutral body and whining; she is easily leashed and brought out the room. While walking out, Puti flinches as the dogs bark at her. The handler brings Puti to the yard and walks her in the playpen. Puti is panting and pacing around, but eventually relives herself. As the handler sits on the bench, Puti frantically jumps on their lap and attempts to lick their face, but they move their head away; Puti disengages on her own and sniffs around. The handler stands up and calls her name, but she shows no interest; they use a squeaker, and she briefly looks at them before turning away again. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks Puti to her kennel; however, Puti refuses to enter, again displaying fearfulness as the dogs in the room bark at her. The handler tosses treats into her kennel, but Puti still refuses. So, the handler has to muscle her in, and Puti eventually enters. The handler removes their leash and ends the interaction.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite incident, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Puti has been observed to jump up on handlers with a loose body. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
