Animal Profile

Icey

Hello, my name is Icey. My animal id is #207596. I am a male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/14/2024.

Icey is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Icey in care has been deteriorating in care and has escalated to snapping/lunging and baring teeth at staff through the kennel door when initially approached. Icey has also shown a high amount of stress out of kennel, pulling very hard, maintaining a heavy pant and wide strained expression when out for walks. Medically, Icey is diagnosed with mild dental disease.

I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Summary:: Due to Icey entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 08/22/24 Icey is introduced to a novel female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Icey doesn't not allow the handlers to place a drag onto him. Icey greets the greeter dog with a tense, stiff body. Icey displays a square body while heavily salivating. Icey is fixated on the greeter dog with a hard face and high-pointed stiff tail. Icey is returned to kennel.

Summary (7):: 9/13/24: Icey is observed to lunge/snap/bare teeth at handlers when they approach his kennel, but stops this behavior once being leashed to go outside. Outside, Icey is observed to be panting very heavily with a wide, strained expression and pulling very hard on leash with a red hue around his eyes. 9/4/24: Icey was leashed with ease and proceeded outside to the yard where he was clipped to a drag leash. Icey was social and highly treat motivated. He would sit on cue for treats and engaged with toys in the yard. When handler reached down to pet him he swatted their hand, appearing more interested in treats than touch. He was returned to kennel with ease. 08/26/24: Icey is standing at the front of kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He takes treats gently from hand and is leashed with ease. Icey walks with a neutral body out to the street and relieves himself immediately once on the sidewalk. He is taken to a play yard where he is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore. Icey spends time scenting and nibbles on a toy. Handler kneels down and Icey slowly approaches, takes treats from hand, and accepts light petting along his side before walking away. Handler tosses a treat scatter which he engages with. Handler holds out a treat and Icey approaches and sits for the treat. He knows cues "sit" and "shake". Handler walks to the exit gate when ready to leave but Icey stands across the yard and stares; not responding to handler calling to him. Handler approaches slowly and offers Icey a treat before leashing him. He recoils slightly as the slip lead touches his neck before shaking off. Handler tosses a pile of treats which he eats as they unclip the drag leash. He shows a slightly tense body but loosens after leash is detached. On the way back to the Care Center, Icey finds a toy and carries it in with him. He is returned to kennel safely. 8/21: Icey was seen hard barking, growling, and lunging at other dogs as they passed his kennel. Once the other dogs are out of sight, Icey begins pacing while panting heavily with wide eyes.-

Summary:: Tense, hyper salivate when collar is taken off

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Icey behavior challenges we recommend he be placed in an adult-only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence,Other

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding- During the assessment Icey began to body block/hover the assessor toy. It is essential to work on desensitizing her to having her possessions handled by using techniques like trading up for higher-value items and practicing "drop it" and "leave it". Please see handout on Resource guarding Fearful/potential for defensive aggression&Anxiety- During intake at the care center, he exhibited hypersalivation when the staff removed his collar. Throughout his stay, he showed fear of loud noises and would hide after relieving himself in the assessment room. Identify the specific triggers that cause him fear and introduce them at a low intensity while pairing them with high-value treats. Gradually increase the intensity of the trigger while ensuring Icey remains comfortable. This process will help him build positive associations with previously fearful stimuli. Always allow Icey to approach new situations at his own pace, and never force him into uncomfortable situations. Using a calm and patient approach will help reduce his fearfulness and build his confidence. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression & generalized anxiety. barrier frustration- In care Icey has displayed barrier frustration lunging and growling in front of his kennel when other dogs pass by.This indicates a need for desensitization and remain calm and composed in situations where he is separated by barriers. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration Kennel presence- In Kennel Icey will lung and jump in front of his kennel baring teeth snapping and growling. He displays tracking behavior fixating on the handler passing the kennel. Other- In the care center Icey displays rope reactivity becoming sensitive when the leash is placed on him and will dodge the lead when it's time for walks.Icey’s leash reactivity might stem from anxiety, fear, or past negative experiences. To help him, try desensitizing him by letting him see and sniff the leash without putting it on, rewarding him with treats and praise when he stays calm. Create positive associations by giving him treats or his favorite toy whenever the leash is near. Start by placing the leash on him for very short periods indoors, gradually increasing the time as he becomes more comfortable. Ensure the environment is calm and free from distractions when putting the leash on him. If the behavior persists, consider consulting a professional dog trainer or behaviorist for personalized guidance.
