Dexter
Hello, my name is Dexter. My animal id is #257103. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 6/12/2026.
Dexter is at risk due to behavioral concerns. In the Care Centers, Dexter has been social with staff and volunteers. Recently, however, he has displayed deteriorating behaviors. He was observed heavily panting in his kennel and biting at the glass door or the corners of the enclosure. When placed in a pop-up crate, he was reported to move the crate closer to a neighboring dog and continued to pant heavily. Medically, Dexter has a heart murmur, mass, nuclear sclerosis, and is overweight.

Summary (7):: 6/26/26: Dexter was at the front of kennel when handler approached where he was easily leashed and taken for a walk. Dexter walked next to handler and in a few instances would pull slightly ahead of handler with light leash pressure. Dexter stopped several times to sniff and investigate his surroundings. In one instance he found something to sniff his teeth were chattering as he sniffed. Handler engaged in a game of Up Down and he did well. He was returned to kennel with no issue. 6/25/26: Dexter is observed to biting at the back corner of his kennel as the room is busy. 6/24/26: It was noted on the board that Dexter is biting glass and walls in kennel. 6/21/26: Dexter is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and wagging tail. He doesn't take treats. He attempts to push out of kennel then is easily leashed. He does not pull or react to the dogs in crates barking at him. Outside, he walks with a neutral body. He allows petting and leash clipping. He returns to kennel slowly but willingly. 6/19/26: Quite happy to be leashed and get out of the kennel. We had a nice, slow and steady street walk near the park where he could sniff and explore. Not much interaction with his handler, although he seemed to be fine with a gentle pet or two. 6/15/26: Dexter is sleeping in his kennel as handler approaches. Handler calls his name and he would slowly turn towards them and gets up slowly. He is easily leashed and removed from his kennel, he walks slowly behind the handler on a loose leash. Throughout the walk, he periodically stops but would eventually walks forward with the handler. He doesn't react towards any dogs or people, once the street walk was completed he is brought back inside for his assessment. Once completed, he is slowly returned back to kennel with no issues. 6/15/26: It is reported that Dexter broke out of his pop up crate, bending the door outwards. 6/14/26: Staff reported that Dexter is moving his pop-up crate into the neighboring dog. When staff approaches his crate, he is heavily panting with a strained expression. He begins to bark repeatedly as the handler ends the interaction. 6/13/26: Dexter is at the front of his kennel, panting. He is easily leashed and walked to the street. He ignores passersby. He allows petting and approaches the handler when coaxed. He is returned to kennel with ease.
Date of intake:: 6/12/2026
Summary:: Wagging tail, allowed all handling
Date of initial:: 6/13/2026
Summary:: Wagging tail and seeking attention initially but began screaming when handled. Opted to sedate
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Dexter so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to handling sensitivity, we recommend a home with no young children.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity
Potential challenges comments:: Handling Sensitivity: During his medical exam, Dexter was intially observed to have a wagging tail and was seeking attention. However, when the exam started, Dexter began high pitched screaming and moving away from examiner. When a muzzle was placed the screaming and avoidance behavior escalated. The handlers opted to sedate him due to the high FAS. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Dexter to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity.
