Animal Profile

Octavia

Hello, my name is Octavia. My animal id is #204300. I am a desexed female black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/12/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- military duty.

Octavia is at risk for behavior concerns due to a consistent pattern of reactivity toward other dogs, including hard barking, growling, lunging, and charging at her crate or kennel door when dogs pass by. She has shown significant difficulty managing visual stimuli, often removing or destroying crate covers intended to reduce her stress. She has also exhibited barrier reactivity toward dogs housed near her, tracking their movements. Octavia can be easily leashed by handlers and staff, engages during interactions with toys, petting, and enjoys treats. Medically, apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I would prefer someone who can be home with me most of the time. Please check here for updated adoption hours.

When off leash with the other dog, she moves away from the other dog when sniffing her backside but will bounce alongside the other dog when he disengages. She attempts to solicit play by bouncing around and vocalizing. KD

Summary (5):: 6/25: Two handlers are walking out another dog when Octavia begins lunging, hard barking, and growling at the other dog while in her kennel. She begins darting back and forth to either side of her kennel while still barking and growling. Another handler that is setting up the musical enrichment sees this and attempts to refocus Octavia with treats as her hitting her kennel doors is startling the other dog, making him reluctant to pass her kennel due to her behavior. She does briefly take the treats when the handler stands in front of her to block her view, but then immediately begins muzzle punching the kennel door when she sees the other dog leaving the room. 6/24: A handler sees Octavia and the small dog above her kennel hard barking at each other through the kennels. Octavia is standing on her back legs with her front paws gripping the bars on the kennel as she continues hard barking, as she tracks the smaller dog's movements in the top kennel.

Summary (6):: 6/8: Octavia continues to hard bark and growl at other dogs as they pass her crate. Attempts to cover her to reduce visual stressors but she pulls in the covers and shreds them multiple times throughout the day. She will follow the other dogs' movements along the sides of her crate, still hard barking and growling. 6/7: Octavia is observed to charge at her crate door and bark hard at dogs who pass her crate. She is given a rawhide and a plushie, which she ignore,s and removes her crate cover to watch the other dogs pass her kennel. 05/27/25: Octavia is standing in the middle of crate with a neutral frame as handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and pulls mildly out to the play yard. Octavia will become tense and pull hard toward a dog in another play yard as she is walked past. Octavia is clipped to a drag lead and free to explore the space. She spends time scenting and relieves herself. She shows no interest in tossed toys or treats throughout her time in the yard. Octavia readily approaches handler when called and accepts petting with a loose, wiggly frame. After her session, she pulls hard toward the dog in the yard again and is easily guided away. Octavia is returned to crate safely. 05/22/25 Witnessed wailing in crate. Hard barks at dogs as they enter/exit kennel room. Will screech excessively. 05/14/25: Octavia greets the handler standing in the front of their crate door. Octavia is easily leashed and escorted out to the play yards for a dog-to-dog interaction. (Please refer to her behavior assessment for her Dog-to-Dog summary for more details.) Octavia is escorted back to her crate where she is unleashed and safety secured.

Summary (7):: Notes from previous stay at ACC. 7/22/24: Octavia is standing in front of her kennel as handler approaches, with a neutral body posture. She begins barking briefly and jumps at the kennel doors but is calmed and simultaneously leashed with a treat, she is then taken to the play yard. Once out of kennel, Octavia pulls towards the play yard gate and once inside the play yard she is placed on a drag leash. While on drag leash, Octavia is observed running back and forth from one side of the play yard to another before stopping in front of the handler and seeking social interaction. She accepts pets and rests in handlers lap as they sit, occasionally running away to investigate scents and passing dogs before returning to handler for pets. After using the bathroom and running around a bit more, Octavia is brought back to kennel without issue. 7/15/24- Octavia is at the front of her kennel jumping up and barking when handler approaches, she is easily leashed and taken to the play yard. She is placed on a drag leash. She relieves herself and chases some pigeons that land in the pen. She jumps up on handler repeatedly, handler turned their body away and tossed treats. She followed the treats to eat them. She would have moments of zoomies and again chase the pigeons. She is social with handler and gently takes treats when presented to her. Handler calls her over to pool and she sniffs at it. Handler rewards her and tosses treats into the pool. Octavia is hesitant at first then slowly would put one paw on the lip of the pool. Handler rewarded again, she eventually fully made it into the pool. Handler rewarded her with a few treats. Octavia would run around the yard and back into the pool. She was releashed and returned to her kennel without issue. 7/9/24: Octavia is at the front of the kennel with a wiggly body. She is easily leashed and takes treats. She is taken for a street walk where she pulls hard and is not easily redirected from pulling. She does not react to dogs or people and chases a pigeon exuberantly. She is taken for her assessment where she is exuberant, jumpy, runs around the room, and allows all handling. She is panting and does not settle, jumping on and off the couch and wandering. She is easily releashed and returned to kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Octavia is described as active and enthusiastic. She will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Octavius.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13):Due to Octavia's potential challenges, it is recommended that she be placed in a home with no children under 13 who are knowledgeable about dogs and capable of addressing her specific needs. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the reactivity displayed in care, we recommend for Octavia to be the only dog int he home and not attend dog parks at this time.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Separation anxiety,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Octavia is noted in the prior home to display a tense body and hovers over toys, food and treats when they are touched. Anxiety/Separation Anxiety/Destructive Behavior: Octavia previous owner in 2024' describes her as anxious in the home when left alone. It is reported that she will become destructive when left alone. Her Most recent adopter (2025) has noted that she has general anxiety, paces, whines and is unable to settle and is anxious when left alone. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and be prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. She would do best in a home where a person is home for a large part of the day or with a plan so they are not alone for long periods of time. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy her destructive behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Octavius will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so she can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Separation Anxiety. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Octaviaprevious owner(2024)states that she is fearful of loud noises. Octavia most recent owner (2025) stated that she will bark/growl when held or restrained and is fearful when startled and towards meeting stranger she will sometimes bark/growl/jump up on them. barrier frustration/Kennel presence: In care Octavia is noted to charge at her crate door and hard bark at dogs who pass her crate.
