Betty Boy
Hello, my name is Betty Boy. My animal id is #245484. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/12/2026.
Betty Boy is at risk due to behavioral concerns in the care center environment. Betty Boy exhibits high arousal and reactivity, particularly when leaving his kennel and will begin to kennel fight/ pull towards other dogs hard barking and lunging. He is noted to leash bite when coming out of kennel. In calmer settling Betty Boy displays a loose body and socializes with handlers, leaning into contact. During training sessions, he is able to work on the 123 game and take a breath. Medically Betty Boy has some lameness in his left hind and Otitis Externa.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

Summary:: Due to Betty Boy entering the facility as a stray, there is no known history of interactions with other dogs prior to intake. 02/26/26: Betty Boy was introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate, Betty Boy approaches with a loose posture and participates in mutual greetings with ears back. He then displays pray bows with a flagging tail. His frustration increases from whining to light grumbling after climbing the gate briefly. After Betty Boy drops back to all four paws on the floor The handler recalls him from the gate, and Betty Boy disengages and returns to the handler, without returning to the gate. Both dogs were separated, concluding the interaction.

He was leashed using a treat and attempted to kennel fight as they left the room and pulled strongly to the Live Room and went inside. Betty boy appeared conflicted as he would periodically become tense Betty with his ears pointed forward and then would drop and play bow with a loose body. After doing this three times, he walked away from the crate and shook off. The handler was able to them clip him to a drag leash and give him a snuffle mat to help him decompress. The handler sets Betty Boy up next to a wall and uses a treat to lure him into a sit., Betty Boy is taking treats roughly. the handler is able to fade the lure, and Betty can sit following a hand signal. Betty Boy is safely returned to his kennel. 02/10/26 (Trainer Note): Betty Boy is jumping on the door of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed, but attempts to kennel fight as he is being led out of the room to the point that his front feet are coming off of the ground. He pulls hard and paces back and forth as he walks outside. The handler works with him on disengaging from dogs and the 123 game. He participates readily and attempts to kennel fight as he is returned, but enters the kennel without issue. 2/8/26: Betty Boy is at the front of his kennel jumping onto the door as the handler approaches his kennel. As the handler puts the leash into the kennel to leash him, Betty Boy grabs the leash quickly but lets go as the handler shows him a handful of treats. He is leashed and will pull hard out of his kennel to the behavior office where he will engage with the snuffle mat for the majority of the session. After a while, he is returned to his kennel. As they walk through the room, Betty boy will attempt to lunge across the handler to the neighboring kennels. He is secured safely.

Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Betty Boy takes treats with hard pressure and becomes mouthy with handlers’ hands, applying noticeable force. These behaviors indicate poor bite inhibition and difficulty regulating arousal during interactions. Training should focus on teaching gentle treat-taking, redirecting his mouth to appropriate items, and reinforcing calm, controlled engagement to encourage softer and safer interactions. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Fearful/Anxiety: Betty Boy is noted to seek exit and will display low body flinching with sudden movement. He is noted to lip lick and display whale when the handler goes to pet him. Training should focus on slow, predictable handling, reinforcing voluntary engagement, and building confidence through gradual exposure. Please see the handout on the decompression period and generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Betty Boy is noted to to kennel fight when coming out of his kennel and when in the hallway when he sees novel dogs he will grow tense and hard stare.Training should emphasize calm exit routines, increased distance from dog triggers, and rewarding focus away from stimuli. Please see the handout On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Leash-biting: Betty Boy is noted to leash bite.Training should include lowering arousal before exiting the home, reinforcing calm focus, and redirecting leash-biting with high-value treats or alternative behaviors. Please see the handout on Leash-biting. Strength/leash pulling: Betty Boy is noted to hard pull while on the leash. Low threshold for arousal: After kennel fighting upon leaving the kennel area, Betty Boy escalates to jumping on the handler and attempting to mount them in the hallway. Training should focus on impulse-control exercises, structured transitions, and reinforcing calm behavior before and after movement through high-arousal areas.
