Neno
Hello, my name is Neno. My animal id is #235806. I am a male sandy dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/23/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- new baby.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormNeno is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Neno's previous owner noted that he is reactive to dogs, and this has been observed here at the Care Center. Neno has been noted to pull hard towards pop-up crates, and kennel fight when moving past kennels. Additionally, Neno has been noted to thrash, head-whip, and jump-on walls; treats and verbal coaxing are ineffective when attempting to redirect Neno. When re-entering kennel, Neno has been noted to baulk, requiring the assistance of a secondary handler to bring Neno back into kennel. Recently Neno has been obsvered to be highly rope reactive. Noted to jump up and bite the leash when handlers are attempting to remove him from kennel and when returning to kennel. Medically, Neno is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy!

Summary:: 9/25/25: Neno greets another dog at the gate with a tense body while hard barking.
Summary (3):: 10/27/25: Neno is at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. The handler uses spray cheese on the kennel bars, meanwhile Neno attempts to bite the leash through the wall. He is able to get the leash and begins tugging the leash into kennel. The handler sprays cheese into his mouth and Neno lets go of the leash. The handler is able to leash Neno with immense difficulty. Even with spray cheese and treats as a distraction Neno persistently goes after the leash. After leashing Neno the handler attempts to guide him outside. Neno continues to persistently leash bite. The handler uses squeakie sounds and tosses treats. Neno is not receptive. A different handler offers another leash as a distraction, Neno is not receptive. Neno continues leash biting through the hallways and into the driveway. Neno continues jumping up, biting and tugging on the leash. Neno uses all of his weight while leash biting and continues tugging backwards. Another handler offers a toy, Neno is not receptive and continues tugging on the leash. When returning to kennel Neno continues biting the leash. When in front of the kennel Neno jumps in and begins pulling the leash into kennel. Pulling hard. The handler offers a toy covered in spray cheese, Neno is not receptive and continues biting the leash. The handler is eventually able to remove the leash and ends the interaction. 10/26/25: Neno is at the front of his kennel with dilated pupils and heavily panting. Cheese spray is used prior to leashing him and he is receptive. Second handler is feeding him treats through the bars and he is quickly leashed while being distracted. Once removed and taken out of the room, he would lunge towards the primary handler twice and then jumped up one last time to bite the handlers treat pouch. He is then straight armed and kept on a short leash on the way to the driveway. In the driveway, he would have a mild pull and would remain neutral bodied. He would relieve himself, second handler would call him over and he would jump onto them socially allowing pets. Shortly after, he is returned to his kennel and once inside he would turn around and begin to pull the leash in. Handler holds the other side of the leash and attempts to use treats and squeakers to redirect him. Handler then attempts to coax him using a soft voice and toys, which he still wasn't receptive to. Handler then decided to use a pet corrector and he dropped the leash instantly. Leash is removed and interaction is then ended.
Summary (4):: 10/25/25: (For mid-day walk) When returning to kennel Neno baulks momentarily just outside of kennel, treats are tossed in and he follows the treats in, leash is removed without issue. 10/25/25: (for AM walk) ACS reports Neno is biting leash when returning to kennel, treats and toys are ineffective to get him to drop leash. 10/24/25: Neno is vocalizing when handler enters room, when unlocking crate Neno attempts to push head out, but is easily leashed. Neno pulls moderately, is loose wiggly body exiting room. When waiting for elevator a dog exits, Neno high-pitch vocalizes and briefly thrashes on leash. Recovers to loose body, mostly loose leash takes treats for sit commands and becomes loose-wiggly when being pet. Upon exiting driveway Neno sees a LMB, repeats high-pitch vocalizing and pulls toward and momentarily thrashes when handler pulls back leash. On sidewalk Neno walks with mostly loose leash, soft body, allows all petting and becomes loose, almost wiggly when treats are presented. Neno relieves himself. Upon re-entering MACC, Neno sees a LMB, pulls toward with forward body, mid-height wagging tail. Neno is somewhat receptive to verbal cues to redirect but not consistent. Neno is walked back to pop-up crate, he enters, begins to bite leash but stops when treats are offered. 10/24/25: Neno is reported to be leash biting intensely, and tries to force himself out of his crate. 10/22/25: Neno is reported to leash biting when returning back to his crate. 10/22/25: Neno is at the front of his crate as handler approaches. He is leashed without issue and removed from kennel, he attempts to pull toward the crates in the hallway but is kept on a short leash by handler. He walks down the stairs with handler pulling moderately at times before exiting to the street for his walk. While outside he stops to sniff and scent mark throughout the walk, Neno relieves himself outside and accepts treats from handler. Neno walks for a while with handler and will zig zag from left to right while on leash attempting to sniff as he walks down the street. He attempts to pull toward people mildly when passing but easily loses interest as he passes them. When seeing dogs Neno will stop and stare at them with a tense body and is difficult to redirect, he will continue to fixate on the dog even when being walked away from them in the opposite direction from them but he eventually loses interest on his own once enough distance is created. After walking for a while he is brought back inside, he returns to his crate without issue and begins biting/tugging handlers leash into kennel as it is removed, he is distracted with treats and interaction is ended.
Summary (5):: 10/20/25: PM WALK: Neno is sleeping in his crate upon approach, handler unlocks the crate and he stands up with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken out of his crate. He is brought to the street. On the street, Neno walks slightly ahead of the handler with a loose leash. Neno relieves himself a few times. He has a lowered body while passing by traffic and will hesitate when walking through strong wind. Neno is brought to the park, he sniffs his surroundings and occasionally engages with the handler. He responded to commands sit and come. Neno Sniffs around the park. He spots a dog a distance away and pulls towards them with his head high and forward posture. He his called away with squeakers and treats. Neno is then walked back to the shelter. Treats are tossed into his crate to encourage him back in which he follows. As the leash is removed from over his head, he bites it and slowly pulls it into the crate. Treats are tossed and he drops the leash and it is removed without further issue. 10/20/25: Staff reported that Neno was reactive to other dogs in the pen. He was vocalizing loudly with raised hackles. When returning him to crate, he refused to go in for treats. A higher value treat was used to coax him inside and the leash was removed. 10/19/25: Neno was observed to be whining loudly in his crate. 10/17/25: Neno is wiggly bodied as handler approaches Neno's crate. Neno, tries to push-out of crate, but is easily leashed. Neno walks out of crate with intermittent pulling, is soft, loose bodied. Neno accepts all petting with soft-loose body. On sidewalk Neno walks with mostly loose leash, mild pulling at times. Neno continues to stop for treats, frequently checks in with handler for both treats and verbal cues. Neno is taken to play-yard, he is loose in yard on a drag-leash, engages with tennis balls the most consistently, chasing after but does not often retrieve them. He will occasionally high-pitch whine at the gate, no other dogs are in the yards. A second staff member joins Neno in the play-yard. Neno is exuberant, wiggly bodied and jumps on second staff member with wiggly body. Second staff member is able to cue Neno into a sit position, takes take treats, and allows all petting with soft wiggly body. Neno also continues to chase toys, mostly tennis balls thrown by handler or staff member. Neno is re-leashed taken back inside MACC, Neno sees a LMB exit elevator, vocalizes high pitch with fast wagging tail, mid-position. Neno recovers and walks back to crate. Neno baulks at crate entrance, however when handler throws toy into crate Neno follows balls in. Neno takes treats dropped into crate.

When walking out the driveway, he jumps on staff members with a loose, wiggly body. During the street walk, Neno walks ahead of the handler with no tension on the leash. He stops to relieve himself, and as the handler cleans up after him, he watches a passerby walk past. He then jumps onto the handler with a loose body, receiving pets from them. Neno attempts to jump on the handler again, but they continue the walk. When walking back to the shelter, Neno briefly turns his head around to look at the handler repeatedly. Before entering the building, Neno approaches another staff member with a loose, wiggly body, and receive pets from them. He relieves himself again during the elevator ride. Date of intake:: 9/23/2025
Summary:: Loose body, lunging and vocalizing towards dog
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Neno so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior and poor impulse control we recommend a home with no children. No Dog Parks: Due to the on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Neno has been observed to jump up on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: Neno has been observed to baulk, thrash, flail and headwhip towards handlers while on leash. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Neno would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: Neno has been observed to zig zag while walking on leash and show displacement behaviors such as sniffing intensely. If Neno displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Neno's previous owner states that he is dog reactive. During intake Neno was observed to lunge and vocalize towards other dogs. Neno is also observed to lunge towards dogs in the popup crates. Neno will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Neno has been obsvered to be highly rope reactive. Noted to jump up and bite the leash when handlers attempt to remove and return his to kennel. This behavior is not able redirected using squeakie sounds or treats. While attempting to leash bite Neno is obsvered to lunge towards the handler and bite their treat bag.
