Animal Profile

Fast Ball

Hello, my name is Fast Ball. My animal id is #219336. I am a desexed female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 6 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/26/2025.

Fast Ball is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Fastball arrived at the Care Centers as a stray. Despite efforts to keep her comfortable, she is showing significant signs of kennel deterioration. She has been observed to be increasingly restless in her kennel; spinning, jumping side to side, bouncing of the walls, and pressing her muzzle against the transfer door in her kennel. Fast Ball is noted to be painting the walls of her kennel with feces, additionally staff have observed a small cut on her face during kennel side visits. At times Fast Ball has shown poor kennel presence, growling and lip curling at staff approaching her kennel, and has been noted to jump toward the kennel latch when being unlocked. With staff, outside of kennel Fast Ball is social, treat motivated, and engages with play such as fetch; trading tennis ball for treats. Medically, Fast Ball is noted to have a wound, and dermatitis.

Meet Fast Ball! 🐾 Fast Ball is a stunning 3-year-old mixed-breed dog who was found tied to a fence and brought in by the NYPD. She's been through a lot, but she's ready to find a loving, patient home where she can build trust and feel safe. My Ideal Home Fast Ball will thrive in a quiet, adult-only home with experienced adopters who understand shy or fearful dogs. She needs a family that will give her time to decompress and let her build confidence at her own pace. Good with Kids? Due to her fearful behavior, Fast Ball is best suited for a home without children under 13 years old. Good with Other Dogs? Fast Ball has shown neutral behavior around other dogs. She greets politely but tends to disengage. She may do well with a calm, well-matched dog, but slow introductions are recommended. Leash Manners 🚶‍♂️ Fast Ball walks well on a leash! She doesn't pull and stays close to her handler. She may fixate on certain people while out on walks, but with positive reinforcement and redirection, she can refocus and continue walking calmly. Overall Health 🏥 Fast Ball arrived underweight with some minor wounds, which have since been treated. She has been vaccinated, microchipped, and is on a medical plan to support her well-being. She will need to be spayed after adoption. Behavior Determination: Level 3 Fast Ball is a fearful pup who needs time to adjust. She may show defensive behavior when uncomfortable but has shown she can warm up with patience and treats. A calm, structured home will help her feel secure. Fun Fact! 🎾 Despite her timid nature, Fast Ball is very food-motivated! If you have treats, you've got a way to her heart. If you're an experienced adopter looking to give a shy but sweet pup a second chance, Fast Ball may be the perfect match for you! 💙

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Fast Ball has been observed to be highly fearful during her stay in the care center. Noted to have a tense body, whale eyes, and a tucked tail. It is important to always go slow and give Fast Ball the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Fast Ball would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Kennel Presence: Fast Ball has been observed to jump up on the kennel door and hard bark and snarl towards handlers. While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Fast Ball may show behavior similar to what they are currently demonstrating in their kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations.
