Pre-Screener FormCalabunga is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Calabunga's previous owner states that he will become tense, growl, hard bark, hover, snap, or attempt to bite when in the possession of toys, food, or treats. During intake, Calabunga lunged and bit the trail adopter's partner on the arm when they touched him while he had a toy in his mouth. This bite left a small puncture wound. The previous adopter also reports that he will bark, growl, lunge, snap, and attempt to bite animals and people that he sees while on walks. While in care, Calabunga has been receptive to treats and accepts contact. Medically, Calabunga is underweight.

Bite history:: The dog has a history of a bite incident, that occurred on Thursday, June 25th, 2026, when the dog and the cat at the trial adopter's parents' home fought. The dog scratched the cat's right eye leading to breaking skin. The Trail Adopter (TA) came to return Calabunga. The TA had him for 2 weeks. The TA stated that there was a bite incident to one of their parent's cats on June 25th. When returning to the parents house after taking Calabunga on a walk, he and the cat were in the living room together. Calabunga was on leash, after about 5-10 min, one of the cats showed up and went in front of Calabunga. Calabunga and the resident cat then attacked each other. Calabunga took some fur but did not bite but did scratch the cat's right eye causing bleeding. The cat was not followed up with a vet. June 28th 2026 While waiting outside of MACC between 4:40-5pm for the trial adoption return, the TA's partner states that when they went to pet Calabunga on his rear end, he lunged at their right arm. The dog grazed at the skin causing a small dot sized puncture. The client stated not noticing warnings due to the toy being in his mouth. The TA mentioned previously that Calabunga has been overprotective of them and has been having behavioral changes with their partner. At times, they both get along and he is able to spend time and hold him, but then he may change in his behavior suddenly. The partner also mentioned that Calabunga was having diarrhea and other issues and believes he may be uncomfortable and this could have caused him to react this way when touched in the rear.

Held/restrained: fearful Disturbed while sleeping: barks/growls, lunges Startled: fearful Pushed off furniture: barks/growls Feet touched: unbothered Collar grabbed: unbothered The TA mentioned that Clabunga is reactive towards their partner. Sometimes Calabunga is calm with them but then he can turn without any explanation and become "stimulated". The trial adopters mentioned that he is also dog reactive and barks when outside. Calabunga's TA describes him as social and affectionate. He may know the cues sit, shake, down, and leave it. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Calabunga so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite history and the resource guarding reported in his previous home, we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to the incident reported in the previous home, we recommend a home with no cats. No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking and growling towards other dogs we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Bite history (human),Bite history (other animal)
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Calabunga's previous adopter stated that he would become tense, hover, snap, and attempt to bite when in the possession of toys, food, and treats. During intake when he was touched while holding a toy, he lunged and bit the person on the arm. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Calabunga's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Calabunga's previous adopter stated that he takes treats roughly. During his previous stay, Calabunga was noted to take treats to mild - hard pressure. While not severe, this behavior suggests the need for continued reinforcement of soft mouth habits and rewarding calm, controlled treat-taking. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Fearful Defensive: Calabunga's previous adopter stated that he will bark, growl, and lunge when disturbed while sleeping. He will also bark and growl when pushed off the furniture. They also report that he is fearful when held and when startled. It is important to move slowly with Calabunga, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Multiple Bite History/Bite History (Human/ Other animal): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Anxiety: Calabunga's previous adopter stated that he has general anxeity. During his previous stay, Calabunga began to display heavy panting during the handling portion of the behavioral assessment. Providing a calm environment, consistent routines, and appropriate enrichment can help support his ability to regulate stress. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Calabunga's previous adopter stated that he will bark, growl, lunge, snap, and attempt to bite aniamls and people that sees on walks. Calabunga will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Calabunga's previous adopter stated that he will jump up to bite and chew on the leash during walks. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
