Animal Profile

Hope

Hello, my name is Hope. My animal id is #245276. I am a female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/9/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Hope is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Hope was initially fearful in care and had gotten loose from a staff member, and when they tried to catch her, she bit one of them on the finger, drawing blood. Hope with familiar staff is loose/wiggly, but with a slow approach is very sweet and affectionate. Medically, Hope is apparently healthy.

Hope came into the care center as a stray and her behavioral history in a home environment is unknown. Hope displays affiliative, playful behaviors with handlers and is often easily leashed, enjoys enrichment, and seeks out attention and treats. However, she showed moments of fearfulness, skittishness, and hypervigilance, particularly during handling and transitions. Hope escaped during kennel removal and bit an ACS staff member on the finger when they grabbed her by the collar, causing a puncture wound. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Summary:: Due to Hope entering the facility as a stray, there is no known history of interactions with other dogs prior to intake. 02/28/26: Hope was introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate, Hope rushed forward and engaged in mutual greetings. When the male was startled by her approach and disengaged, Hope checked in with the handler. Both dogs returned to the gate, and Hope softly licked the male’s muzzle through the barrier. Hope then became frustrated and bounced off the gate, again startling the male, who disengaged and did not return. Hope remained at the gate for the remainder of the interaction with a slow swaying tail, watching the male. Both dogs were separated, concluding the interaction.

Summary (6):: 2/28/26 (playgroup): Hope is at the front of her kennel rebounding off her door as the handler approaches. As they are opening the door, Hope remains at the front jumping and pawing at the door. The handler will use a treat to keep her still while placing the leash on her. She will come out of her kennel quickly and will walk beside the handler for the entire walk up to the play yard, maintaining a bouncy gait beside the handler and occasionally jumping onto them. Once in the play yard her collar is clipped with a drag leash and she is able to roam around. She will approach the gate with a loose frame and wide tail wags. (see dog-dog for more information) After the gate greet she is returned to her kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 2/25/26: Hope is at the front of the kennel jumping on her kennel door as the handler approaches. The handler leashes her with a treat and she will come out of the kennel quickly, pulling hard to the play yard where the handler tosses some treats into the snow for Hope to find. After a while, she is returned to her kennel with no issue. 2/18/26: Hope is lying on her bed as the handler approaches and is easily leashed to be brought out for a walk. Hope is aloof at first to the handler, but when coaxed, will tuck her head into the handler's knees and accept petting along her neck and back. Hope pulls moderately, does not react to any dogs or people and is easily returned to her kennel. 2/14/26: Hope is at the front of her kennel jumping onto the kennel door as the handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and will come out of her kennel quickly. She will pull mildly outside to the yard. Once in the yard the handler will toss and hide treats in the snow and Hope will jump into the piles of snow and dig for treats. After a while, she is returned to her kennel with no issue. 1/22/26: Hope is laying down on her bed as handler approaches. She is able to come forward to the front is leashed with ease. She is then taken to the behavior room for her assessment. In the room, she has a loose and wiggly body and would approach the handler to receive pets and treats. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. She is able to return back to her kennel with no issues. 01/21/26: Hope accepts treats from the handler but initially avoids leashing, retreating to the back of the kennel. After successful leashing, she is escorted to the play yard for enrichment. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on her. Hope roams the yard independently but displays skittish and fearful behaviors, including hypervigilance and cautious movement. She continues to accept treats from the handler and remains in close proximity to the handler, seeking security while scanning the environment. Session is completed without incident, and Hope is returned to her kennel safely.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Hope be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Hope is noted to display growling behavior and is noted to become fearful. She is noted to become fearful on walks. Training should focus on slow, low-pressure interactions, increasing distance from triggers, and reinforcing calm behavior to help build confidence and reduce fear-based responses. Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Bite history (human): In the care center Hope got loose from an ACS while they where trying to remove her from her kennel and ran from main adoption A towards main adoption B. When another ACS staff tried to help and grab her collar, Hope bit their left middle finger causing 1 puncture in between main adoption A and main adoption B. It was a bite and release.
