Energy level/descriptors:: Buddy is noted to have a very high energy level in the prior home.

Other Notes:: Buddy tends to jump up often or nonstop and pull very hard on the leash. He lunges playfully at dogs he sees while outside. Buddy is unbothered by physical stimuli. Buddy is a social and affectionate dog! He is very active and playful, and can usually be found in the living room. Buddy allows for bathing, brushing, and nail trimming. He loves car rides and has experience in a crate but does not do well. Buddy is used to going on 30-45 minute walks twice per day and pulls pretty strongly. Buddy is a smart guy and knows lots of tricks- sit, stay, lay down, come. According to a prior owner, Buddy "loves hugs, kisses, and dancing to music."

Summary (6):: 7/11/26: Buddy is at the front of his kennel with loose body when handler approaches. He is leashed with a treat lure and taken out of the room. He pulls hard towards dogs in pop-up crates but handler is able to distract him with treats. Once in elevator, Buddy exuberantly jumps on the handler (his body is loose and face is soft with closed mouth). He leans on them asking for more pets and gets down by his own after handler tosses treats on the ground. Buddy pulls harder downstairs all the way outside. Once in the driveway, he pulls very hard towards the gates and immediately relieves himself. Buddy continues walking with moderate leash tension ahead of the handler. When he sees another dog he stops; he starts lip licking and whining but willingly walks away after handler calls him. Buddy follows command "sit" and gently takes treat as a reward. He is heavy breathing but calms down after handler starts engaging with him. He is social with handler and allows petting; he shows wagging tail and start jumping onto handler again in exuberant way asking for more pets. Buddy doesn't react towards other people passerby. His body is loose most of the time. During returning handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Buddy back into his kennel with ease.

Summary (7):: 7/4/26: Buddy is observed to be heavily panting and barking repeatedly in kennel. He is pressing his face in the corner closest to the neighboring dogs kennel and barking repeatedly. When handler passes he appears to mouth and muzzle punch the front of the kennel. He is left with a few treats as the interaction is ended. 7/1/26: Buddy is lying down in front of his kennel when handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken out of the room. He attempts to pull towards dogs in neighboring kennels with hard barking but handler is able to muscle him out. Buddy pulls hard all the way outside but is not interested in other dogs in pop-up crates or staff members in the hallways. Once he gets to the street he immediately relieves himself and continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with moderate pulling. When he sees another dog his body gets tense with hackles up but is redirectable with squeaker toy. Buddy doesn't react towards other people passerby. He is receptive to treats and allows petting but most of the time remains aloof. His body is neutral but gets tense when he hears loud noises (car truck and people screaming). On the way back he pulls harder and makes himself coughing and panting a lot. During returning handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Buddy back into his kennel with ease. 6/25/26: Buddy is lying down at the front of his kennel when handler approaches. He slowly gets up and shows whale eyes when handler attempts to unlock the kennel door. He is leashed with a treat lure; once he is out of the kennel, he immediately starts pulling towards neighboring dogs with tense body starting kennel fight. In the hallways he attempts to jump on the pop-up crates. Once outside, he pulls hard towards the gates and while crossing the street. He sniffs a lot and pulls hard towards certain spots and, after some time, relieves himself. Buddy pulls hard and walks ahead of the handler. He is chocking himself but continues pulling putting all body weight in front. He is hypervigilant and constantly searching for an exit. His body remains tense with tucked tail. Buddy is not engaging with handler; he is panting and salivating a lot. After walk is finished, Buddy is taken to the Canine Behavior office for the assessment (see notes). During returning handler is able to pre-clip the leash but Buddy attempts to kennel fight again and had to be muscled back into the kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Buddy is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Buddy.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Buddy behavioral concern we recommended is placed in an adult only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Buddy came into the care center as an owner surrender due to moving to a no pet policy home. In the prior home he is noted to have high energy, Buddy is a smart guy and knows lots of tricks- sit, stay, lay down, come. According to a prior owner, Buddy "loves hugs, kisses, and dancing to music." Buddy has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has show Kennel reactivity behavior lunging towards dogs in crates and high level of anxiety seeking exit, flushed face and heavy panting. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Basic manners/poor impulse control: In the prior home it is noted that Buddy tends to jump up often. Training should focus on reinforcing calm behaviors and teaching appropriate alternatives. Please see the handout on-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Anxiety: In the care center Buddy is noted to seeks exit whining flushed face lip licking. Providing consistent routines, enrichment, and low-pressure interactions will help support his ability to regulate stress. Please see the handout on generalized anxiety. Strength/leash pulling: Buddy is noted to hard pull on leash. Structured loose-leash training, along with appropriate equipment and consistent reinforcement, will be important to improve control and create a safer walking experience. Handling should focus on creating distance from triggers, proactively guiding him away from distractions, and reinforcing calm, disengaged behavior.
