Hello, my name is T J. My animal id is #259762. I am a male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 8/7/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

In his previous home, TJ is reported to be social with strangers and children. He displayed social behavior during intake, leaning into pets around children. Medically, TJ is apparently healthy.

TJ came to ACC via owner surrender. TJ's previous owner describes him as a sweet and affectionate dog who loves to be where his people are. He is exuberant and pulls hard on leash when on walks, so he will need to learn more leash manners. TJ has found the shelter extremely stressful and overwhelming: thrashing, baulking, and head whipping when being returned to kennel. TJ needs a low traffic quiet environment to decompress and show his true self.

Subjective: BAR Observed Behavior - Hard staring and hard barking at staff Is there evidence of suspected cruelty? No Objective: P = 160 R = 24 BCS 5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: Clean adult incisors visible through muzzle. Limited exam PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupneic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Male intact MSI: Multifocal thinning hair along dorsum. Upon intake TJ was calm and allowed all handling. He was friendly, leaning into pets. He was gentle with children at MACC and was easily leashed.

For a New Family to Know: TJ is a very active and playful dog! He is social and affectionate and can usually be found where the people are. He loves bath time/water and allows for bathing and brushing. TJ does not like being in a car. He tends to pull hard on the leash. TJ knows sit, and is a loving guy!

Summary:: In the Care Centers, TJ was observed thrashing and balking during walks. When placed back into his kennel, he snapped at the tools being used to remove his leash. Due to these behaviors, TJ will not receive a handling assessment.

Summary (7):: 8/8/26:(Pm) Tj is at the front of the kennel when the handlers approach; he begins to low growl but stops when the handler opens his kennel door and drops the slip lead over his head. He hard pulls his way out of the kennel room and out of the care center. Once outside, he is hypervigilant and will sniff trees, then relieve himself. When the handler speaks to him, he will go into a sit and wag his tail. He allows light petting but will lip lick and look back. After his walk he is taken back into the care center where he begins to headwhip and baulk. He begins to thrash and pull away, a second lead is added but he begins to thrash but wanting to turn the corner back into his kennel room. A 3rd handler comes to assist and place a belly band where he begins to low growl and display a flushed face and tight muzzle. They are able to lift up his back leg and quickly walk him back to his kennel room, he thrashed when finally placed inside. Once in his kennel, he begins to growl and bare his teeth. A safety hook is used to attempt to remove his slip leads he begins to growl and snap at the leads, he begins throwing himself against the walls of his kennel and screeching, he is given a break and the handler is able to safely remove the slip leads.- 8/8/26: TJ is reported to thrash while returning to the building, and head whip with leash pressure. As K9 behavior is called, the handlers speak to him in a baby voice and he followed them inside. When approaching the room, TJ stops walking due the sounds of the other dog rooms. Once the door is closed he continues towards his room. However, once he's about to enter, TJ thrashes and baulks when they attempt to bring him inside. The main handler jogs him into the room and muscles him into his kennel. TJ snaps at the hook that's being used to retrieve the leashes.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to TJ's behavior in the Care Centers, Tj should go to a home with older, behaviorally savvy children. Place with a New Hope partner: TJ should be placed with a New Hope Partner that can manage his behaviors.

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: T.J's owner stated he jumps on the family and strangers in a friendly manner. Positive reinforcement should be used to help manage his impulses. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Handling/touch sensitivity: During a walk, TJ started to thrash and balked on leash. He is uncomfortable with slip leads and will need positive reinforcement to help him feel comfortable with equipment placed on him. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/Anxiety: TJ's owner reported he is fearful and anxious. He will need dailt enrichment and time to decompress in his new environment. Please see the handouts on Decompression and General Anxiety. Strength/leash pulling: TJ was noted to pull hard on leash. A front-clip harness should be used to alleviate his strength.
