Mocha Raspberry
Hello, my name is Mocha Raspberry. My animal id is #261405. I am a desexed female brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/1/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormMocha Raspberry is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Mocha Raspberry has begun showing signs of kennel stress and deterioration. This behavior has been observed in an increased level of kennel reactivity around dogs, including charging, barking, spinning, and jumping at kennel walls. Recently, she reacted toward dogs in nearby crates and redirected onto the handler’s leg, causing bruising and a hole in the handler’s pants. With the handler, she is noted to be social, leaning into petting. Medically Mocha Raspberry is apparently healthy.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 8/29/26: Mocha Raspberry is introduced to a novel intact male and begins alarm barking through the play yard fence before the dog gets to the yard entrance. She follows him along the fence line, lunging and barking. When the dog enters the yard behind the barrier, Mocha begins snarling while pulling strongly towards him. She snaps at the fence and continues snarling as she is pulled away.
Summary (5):: 10/04/26: Mocha Raspberry is at the front of her kennel when handler approaches. She is leashed with a treat lure and exits the kennel. She pulls hard out of the room and continues pulling strongly in the hallways ahead of the handler. Once outside she immediately relieves herself and continues walking ahead of the handler with strong pulling. She is panting and displays visible muscle tension. Handler is able to cue her to sit and give some time to regulate breathing. She accepts treats and allows petting. Once walk resumes, she slightly reduces her pace. She sniffs a lot during the walk changing her directions and pulling towards spots she wants to discover. She has no reaction to any stimuli on the street. On the way back she pulls harder toward the shelter. Once in the hallway she attempts to jump onto one of the crates in front of the room but is pulled away. Handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Mocha Raspberry back into her kennel with no further issues. 10/3/26: Mocha Raspberry is reported to be very reactive towards the dogs in the crates near the residing room. As she reacts and attempts to get towards one of them, she bites the handler's leg, causing a hole in the pant leg and bruising on their leg, but no broken skin. KR/BB 9/27/26: Mocha Raspberry is standing at the front of her kennel, jumping and pawing at the kennel door when handler approaches. She is not receptive to treats but handler still is able to put the leash on. Mocha readily exits the kennel. She pulls with mild tension in the hallways toward the exit and has no reaction to pop-up crates or staff members. Once outside, she sniffs around the driveway and relieves herself. After she continues walking slightly ahead of the handler on the street with no leash tension. She shows no reaction toward passing people or other dogs. During the walk Mocha Raspberry remains social with the handler. She frequently looks back for check-ins, responds to verbal cues, accepts petting and treats (takes gently). She remains loose body and soft face. During return, handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Mocha Raspberry back into her kennel with ease.
Summary (6):: 9/23/26: Mocha Raspberry is reported to repeatedly jump off the walls when the dogs are walking in and out the room; she continues this in a new, large kennel. 9/17/26: Mocha is standing at the front of her kennel with a soft body; the handler clips their leash to her collar. As they attempt to pick her up, Mocha retreats; the handler holds the leash taught and lifts her out the kennel; they carry her to the yard and place her down in a pen. Mocha is placed on a dragline and immediately lies down when the handler sits down. Mocha allows pets and takes treats softly. She hears other handlers and dogs, but the handler distracts her with pets and treats. She does run and follow a dog being walked back into the shelter. The handler places the slip leash on Mocha and clips it to the fence to help another handler with a dog; Mocha remains with a soft body as another familiar handler stands with her. When the main handler returns to get her, Mocha remains soft. She is returned to her kennel shortly after. 9/15/26: Mocha is observed to become reactive in kennel when the dog next to her barks; she hard barks, especially towards the shared kennel wall, and spins and jumps off the wall. 09/10/26: Mocha Raspberry is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches, she barks a few times before softening and wagging her tail low and slowly. She is shown the leash and moves away, she continues to move away but handler is still able to leash her slowly and gently before offering a treat which Mocha accepts. She is carefully lifted and placed down before walking with handler out to the street. Outside Mocha and handler go on a long walk, Mocha is neutral bodied and checks in occasionally with handler, she is offered treats and accepts them gently from handler. She also passes people on the street without issue and shows no interest in dogs she sees in the distance. When petting Mocha she lip licks briefly so handler immediately stops and she recovers immediately. She is eventually brought back inside and allows handler to clip her leash and lift her back into kennel, interaction is ended shortly after.
Summary (7):: 9/3/26 (midday): Mocha Raspberry is at the front of her kennel with a soft body. As the handler presents the leash, Mocha goes to the back; they use a treat lure and attempt to leash her, but she backs away when the leash is brought closer to her. After several attempts, the handler lassos Mocha; they pet her before she is carried out of the room. On the street, Mocha walks with mild leash tension, with no people or dog reactivity. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Mocha to her kennel. 9/3/26: Mocha Raspberry observed to charge at the front of her kennel and bark when dogs and other handlers walk past her top kennel. 8/29/26 (D2D): Mocha Raspberry greets handler at the front of her kennel with a loose and wiggly body where she is easily leashed and picked up from her top kennel and placed on the ground. Mocha Raspberry walks slightly ahead of handler thru hallway to the backyard for playgroup (Please see dog to dog notes for details). After playgroup they were returned to their kennel with no issue. 8/12/26: Mocha Raspberry is at the front of her top kennel, pacing back and forth, when handler approaches. She dodges the leash, but handler is able to easily lasso her and take out of the kennel (allows pick-up with no issues). Once in the yard, she walks slowly next to the handler and when she gets to the pen, she relieves herself. Mocha Raspberry walks straight toward kuranda bed located in the corner and lies down. Handler bends in front of her and Mocha Raspberry immediately gets closer and leans onto them seeking attention and asking for pets. She ignores offered treats. Mocha Raspberry places her head and front paws on handler's knees and continues calmly lying down. Her body remains soft with relaxed face. Mocha Raspberry doesn't react toward other dogs or staff members in neighboring pens. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash, pick her up and bring Mocha Raspberry back into her kennel with ease. 8/5/26: Mocha Raspberry is in a top kennel and crouches down towards the handler with a wagging tail and panting. She dodges the leash for a while so a second handler is called who eventually lassoes her. She is carried down and brought to the street where she pulls lightly, and ignores dogs and passersby. She is still panting. She is brought to the assessment room (see notes) then returned to kennel by pick up.

Date of initial:: 8/2/2026
Summary:: Repeatedly resists muzzle; wiggly for exam.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Mocha Raspberry so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to redirection due to this we reccomend she is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Single-Pet Home/Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Mocha Raspberry has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that she should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Mocha Raspberry associate dogs with things she enjoys, like toys or treats. Place with a New Hope partner: Mocha Raspberry came into the care center as a stray; due to this, her behavioral history in a home environment is unknown. In the care center Mocha Raspberry has shown reactivity and over-arousal around dogs, including hard barking, charging, spinning, and jumping at kennel walls/crates. She is noted to have redirected onto a handler’s leg while reacting to dogs, causing bruising and a hole in the handler’s pants. With the handler, she is noted to be social, leaning into petting. Due to behavioral concerns, we recommend that she be available for rescue through one of our new hope partners.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Mocha Raspberry is reported to be very reactive towards the dogs in the crates near the residing room. As she reacts and attempts to get towards one of them, she bites the handler's leg, causing a hole in the pant leg and bruising on their leg, but no broken skin. Continued management should focus on reducing exposure to triggering situations, improving her ability to disengage from other dogs. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Anxiety: Mocha was observed to be panting heavily throughout their assessment. If Mocha displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. Kennel presence: Moacha is noted when in a top kennel to bark and spin at passing dogs in the room.
