I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/30/2017, with the surrender reason stated as person health - allergies.

Toby is at risk for behavior concerns (New Hope Only determination). Toby has been fearful in care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior. Toby does not allow petting and will hiss if an interaction is attempted.

During intake Toby was in the carrier growling. The counselor was not able collar him but was able to take his picture with no problems.

Basic Information:: Toby is a 3 year old gray and white neutered short haired cat who was surrendered by his owner due to allergies. The owner stated that she got Toby from a pet store when he was 8 weeks old.

How is this cat around strangers?: Owner stated that when around strangers Toby is shy for a few minutes but he will warm up. When playing with adults he is gentle.
How is this cat around children?: Toby has spent time around a 3 month old baby and he was respectful. Toby has not played with children so it is unknown how he will react.
How is this cat around other cats?: Toby has not spent time around other cats in the home so it is unknown how he will react.
How is this cat around dogs?: Toby has spent time around a large dog and when approached by the dog he will run away.
Behavior Notes: Owner stated that overall Toby behaves well. On the way to the ACC in the car he was quiet. Toby has never given a bath. When having his nails trimmed he will struggle to get away. Toby will tolerate being bathe, held put in a carrier or disturbed while he sleeps.

For a New Family to Know: Owner described Toby as friendly and affectionate. When at home he likes to climb high and window watching. When at home he will follow his owner around. He loves catnip. Toby has been kept indoors only and eats both wet and dry food. Toby is used to a hooded litter box with clumping or clay litter. He scratches on a scratching post made out of carpet.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Fractious. Requires net for handling
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/02/18 Lying on top of kuranda bed, body tense, tail wrapped around him. He tolerates petting along his head and body with the bear-claw while tilting his ears and turning his head slowly to watch the claw. Begins to growl. Needs more time to adjust. 01/03/18 Lying on top of kuranda bed, body tense and eyes wide. Follows the movements of my hand while beginning to growl. He sniffs the treats I place down but doesn’t eat them. Leans away and pins back ears when touched with the bear-claw. Uncomfortable – needs more time to adjust.

Reaction to assessor:: Toby was alert and lying down on top his kuranda bed.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Toby seems curious; his whiskers fan out and he slowly leans forward to investigate.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Toby backs away and lip licks.
Reaction to touch:: Toby tenses up, his pupils dilate and he starts to low growl when the assessor extends his hand out. His ears bend flat, then he hisses and swats when pet on his head.

Potential challenges comments:: Toby has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Toby is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
