Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This animal needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the need for extensive behavior modification, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. Please read the below information thoroughly about this dog and if you are interested in fostering or adopting, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Gabe is on emergency placement for behavioral reasons. He has been highly fearful in the care center and has not completely opened up to appearing social or allowing handling. Medically, Gabe has CIRDC. Since Gabe arrived at the care center, he has been uncomfortable with most handling. He will allow handlers to leash him and remove him from the kennel. However, he will flinch when the leash is clipped and on one occasion, quickly turn toward the handler when her leg is brushed up against his. Gabe came to ACC as a stray with another dog so we know nothing of his behavior in a home which is why we recommend he go to an experienced, adult-only home that will give Gabe the space and time needed to decompress.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Date of intake:: 10/5/2021

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Date of assessment:: 10/7/2021

Summary:: Gabe has appeared highly fearful in the care center, at times growling when approached in kennel. He has allowed leashing for walks however has not displayed social behavior. When brought into the room for an assessment, Gabe kept distance from the assessor and did not open up to handling. Due to concerns for Gabe's level of stress he is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Date of initial:: 10/5/2021

Summary:: Tense, growling, sedated for exam

ENERGY LEVEL:: Due to Gabe arriving as a stray, it is unknown how his energy level may translate into a home environment. At this time, Gabe appears fearful in the care center.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 10//7: Gabe has been observed to growl when initially approached in kennel. With slow approach he has been able to be leashed and be brought outside for walks, however does not yet allow handling or display any social behavior.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Gabe's high level of fear, we recommend a home with no children. Due to all noted concerns, the behavior department recommends Gabe be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow him to acclimate comfortably to his new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing Gabe to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior he presents with outside of the care centers.
