Sprocket
Hello, my name is Sprocket. My animal id is #253923. I am a male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 5/7/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormSprocket is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Sprocket has displayed leash biting, fixating and snapping toward hands during handling, and resistance returning to kennel, including pancaking and snarling when pressure was applied to attempt to move him. Sprocket is social with familiar handlers, seeks out petting and treats. Medically, Sprocket is being treated for persistent CIRDC infection, pododermatitis which has been improving, callous/masses that have improved during stay, and is underweight.

Sprocket came into the care center as a stray, due to this his behavioral history in a home environment is unknown. Sprocket has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. He will attempt petting around his head and face. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. A volunteer writes: Your future password may not be in a pop up crate in the back room of the shelter covered with a blanket, but we should take a look just in case. Sprocket2026 or Sprocket1234! Or any variation thereof would be good variations of said password. Of course my kryptonite is a lowrider meatball so when I meet Sprocket it's easy for me to start imagining him in a home. He is so smart and full of character. Like when he started drinking out of the over flowing pool like a fountain on a hot day. Or how he bats around toys in the yard. Or when he smooshed his face against the crate bars so his lips overflowed out of the sides. Sprocket was found by a good Samaritan walking down the street with a red leash dragging behind him. She was able to coax him into her car and bring him into ACC. Upon intake it was noted that he was emaciated and had overgrown nails. Medical has noted he has multiple large dermal masses, pododermititis, and suspected food allergies. Due to some handling sensitivities and fearfulness, Sprocket is available through a New Hope rescue partner. At this time, he has not been assessed with other dogs.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
Date of intake:: 5/7/2026
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray (Unknown History)
Date of assessment:: 5/14/2026
Summary:: 05/14/26: Sprocket is taken to the behavioral office for a handling assessment. He displays a loose body, but will begin to growl when the handler approaches to attempt to clip the drag lead to the collar. He will approach the handler for pets only on his head and will not allow touch past his neck, due to this, a handling assessment will not be condcuted at this time.
Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/29/26 Sprocket is introduced to a novel male while off leash. He approaches the gate with a neutral frame and will sniff the male through the gate. He loosens slightly and will do toe taps and then lightly bite the gate before giving a bounce and walking away.
Summary (7):: 05/29/26 (PG): Sprocket is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He attempts to shove his face out of the kennel while being leashed, but the handler uses treats to guide him through the leash calmly. Sprocket lays down on the floor whenever he and the handler stop walking to let traffic pass by. He can be coaxed off of the floor with treats. After his interaction, Sprocket is brought back inside and returned to his kennel. He doesn't go in immediately, but will jump into the kennel when treats are tossed. 5/20/26: Sprocket is reported and observed to not want to go back to kennel. Behavior staff try to coax him but he remains at the top step and when trying to be nudged from his behind begins to snarl. Sprocket has to be helped down the step and handed off to the staff member, and he is easily put back into his crate. 5/19: Sprocket is standing at the front of his crate with a wiggly body when he sees a familiar handler. He is easily leashed with treats and darts out of his crate. He is taken to the play yard and allowed the hadnler to clip his collar with a drag leash as he eats treats. He sniffs the pool, but doesn't show further interest in it. Sprocket alternates between briefly sniffing around the yard and seeking treats. When walking back to his kennel, Sprocket pancakes at the last step before entering the hallway. He will take treats, but then stops when he gets to the edge of the step. The handler turns off the floor fan and resets him, and he walks down the last step and into his crate without further issue. 5/10 (PM): Sprocket was lying in his bed when a handler approached his crate. He stands and is easily leashed when he sees the handler. Sprocket is taken to the behavior office because he is unable to walk far. He pauses occasionally in the hallway to give himself breaks. Once in the office, he wiggles at the handler when they sit on the couch. Sprocket eagerly eats treats as the handler collars him. He wanders the room briefly before returning to the hadnler. Sprocket nudges the handler's hands for petting. Seeking further contact when they rub between his eyes. Once his crate is cleaned, he returns without issue. 5/9: (1) Sprocket is reported to leash bite, pulling leads into his crate when attempting to remove him.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Sprocket is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Sprocket has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
