Coco is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Coco in care has bitten a staff member while they were trying to return him to kennel from his walk. Coco turned and bit the staff member, not breaking skin but leaving their hand swollen with redness and teeth marks. He is continuing to escalate toward staff when returning him to kennel, including baring teeth, snapping, thrashing, and flailing. Coco has been presenting as social in the care center, but has displayed significant handling sensitivity. Medically, Coco is apparently healthy.

Summary:: According to Coco's previous owner(s), Coco has interacted with different dogs and is often described as He gets very excited around other dogs. he loves playing. 04/24/25: When off leash at the Care Center Coco is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate Coco approaches with a neutral frame as both dogs scent one another through the gate. After scenting Coco will walk away from the gate, displacement scenting. The novel male will remain at the gate with a high curved flagging tail. The novel male's ears are forward as he hyper salivates, fixating on Coco. Coco does not return to the gate. This will conclude the interaction.

Summary (6):: 4/30: (1) ACS staff came to ask the behavior team for help with returning Coco to the kennel, as he was snapping at another ACS who was trying to walk him into the room. Two behavior staff approach and the handoff with the lead is done. Coco readily follows Handler 1 into the room but begins baring his teeth and snapping at them once he nears his kennel. He then begins thrashing and gets the lead stuck under his front leg. Handler 1 attempts again, and Coco begins flailing and snapping at the lead before pancaking on the ground for a few seconds and then rises to a sitting position. Handler 2 double-leashes Coco due to his escalations, and he begins gator rolling and sipping at both the handler and the leads, crashing into the kennel, but they have to muscle him in. Handler 1 waits for Handler 2 to get a hook for the leads to be removed. While in the kennel, Coco drinks water but then freezes and growls when Handler 1 shifts their body to reach for the hook that is being passed to them. Coco lip curls at the hook but otherwise allows for the removal. (2) Several minutes later, two handlers approach Coco to move him to a kennel to accommodate his behavior. He stands at the front of the kennel, taking treats with a soft mouth. He is easily leashed and readily walks out, but pulls toward other dogs' kennels, standing on his hind legs when one becomes highly reactive at the sight of him. The handler waits for the dog in the hallway to pass before walking out the room with Coco, heading toward his new kennel. Coco enters the new room and kennel without issue. 04/29/25: Coco's behavior remains consistent with previous note dated 04/25/25 (Please refer to that note for more details.) 04/28/25 Coco is at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame. The handler leashes him with ease and is taken out for a walk. Coco maintains his neutral frame as he trots along side the handler. Coco remains neutral in frame through out the walk, maintaining his pace. He will explore throughout the walk while also marking different areas in the process. Coco is returned to the facility where he will enter the building as well as his kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 04/27/25: Coco is at the front his kennel with a neutral body standing with the handler to be leashed. Coco is leashed and brought outside of his kennel where he tries to pull the dog across from him. Coco is refocused with leash pressure and taken for a walk outside, where he is aloof to the handler, pulling hard and trying to drink from water sources such as puddle, small hose runoffs spots and small pools of water by staircases pulling and whining. Coco is aloof the entire walk, heavily panting and exploring his surroundings. Coco is taken back to his kennel after his walk and outside the kennel room is attempted to be clipped where he head whips and curls his lips at the handler when the leash touches the side of him. Coco is brought into the office to wait for his kennel to be cleaned and is trying to drink out of the mop bucket, still aloof with staff into room,. Coco is clipped slowly without him noticing and brought back to his kennel with no issue. 04/25/25: Coco greets the handler standing in front of her kennel with a loose frame patiently awaiting to be leashed. Coco is easily leashed and escorted out for a walk. When on walk Coco will ahead of the handler very mildly pulling. Coco will spend her time taking in the environment, usually tracking along the walls of building's she passes. Coco is escorted back to the care center where she is unleashed and safely secured in her kennel. (PM) Coco's behavior remains consistent with the entry above. 04/24/25: As a handler goes to clip the leash for Coco after a walk, Coco turned around and quickly bit (no broken skin) the handler on the hand before contact was made. No warning signs were observed. The handler put Coco back into his kennel and a hook was used to take off the leash. ACS showed the a behavior team member their hand from the bite the bite did not break skin but was swollen, with redness and teeth dents. 4/24/25: Coco is at the front of the kennel with a loose body, is easily leashed and brought into the behavior office for his assessment. Coco in the behavior office is very jumpy, social and explores his surroundings while in the room. Coco finishes his handling assessment with no issue, and is easily leashed and brought back into his kennel with no issue.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Other

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Coco jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve his impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Other: When going back into the kennel room Coco head whipped and bite a ACS on the hand when they went to reclip his lead. The bite did not break skin but was swollen and left redness, and teeth dents.
