BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Dorian is currently with touch and novel stimuli, and due to behavior reported in his previous home, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Dorian be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Dorian to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Dorian to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior dorian presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Dorian is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Resource guarding: Dorian's previous owner notes that he may snap when his food or bowl is touched. We recommend that Dorian be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Dorian's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Dorian is reported to snap if new people approach him. He has displayed this behavior at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Dorian the option to walk away from any social interaction. Dorian should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Dorian’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Mrs Pancake would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
