Blizzard
Hello, my name is Blizzard. My animal id is #245000. I am a desexed male white cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/12/2026, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.
Recommend at risk list for medical reasons. Blizzard has FIV and persistent skin lesions that have not responded to treatment in shelter. We suspect the underlying cause is allergies, and Blizzard may need to be on a long-term medication that is not available in shelter. Behaviorally, Blizzard has allowed medical handling and is social, leaning into petting.

He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/16/25 FB79 At the top of his den, Blizzard sits with his tail wrapped around his legs, wide eyes and his ears forward. He has no reaction when i open the kennel door and when i toss in some treats for him he quickly jumps down with a high tail and starts to eat. He flinched when i attempted to pet his head and kept pulling back when i continued to try. Blizzard did not escalate and remained tolerant but needs to warm a bit more. 1/20/26 FB58 In his den and hidden from view, I can't coax him out with treats or speaking to him softly. After some time, I am able to get him to start eating squeeze up enthusiastically from a tray placed in his den, as well as dry treats dropped into his den. No interest in coming out into the rest of the cage, and I add a cage cover for him. 1/21/26 FB06 Blizzard is in his den out of view. I placed some squeeze up outside the den but he was not interested. As I opened the den cover his eyes widened and face tensed with forward ears. I offered him the scratcher, he sniffed and then left the den through the portal when I attempted to pet him. As I offered the scratcher again he went back into the den, petting him along his backside as he entered. 1/29/26 FB61 Crouched in back of kennel, body and face tense with his pupils dilated and his tail curled around his feet. He steps forward to sniff the treats offered and he flinches, squints his eyes and backs away when I attempt petting. I try petting again as he's eating his squeeze-ups, and as long as he's focused on his treaties he is completely tolerant of petting. Very food motivated! Sniffed catnip toy and batted at it as well. 1/30/26 FB61 Standing in front of kennel as the assessor approached, body and face slightly tense, his tail raised and his back arched. He makes eye contact with dilated pupils and he hops onto his den with wide eyes as the kennel door opened. Blizzard hops down when offered squeeze-ups and he leans in for petting with energy while raising his pilo-erect tail and swirling it all around. He's doing much better today but may possibly have the potential to become oversitmulated? Will continue to monitor. So brave today!

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Inside of the den, Blizzard is asleep and lifts his head when the kennel door is open; he has neutral eyes and forward ears but his eyes dilate when the assessor tosses in treats for him. He doesn't lean in to sniff the tool but he does focus on the room behind the assessor and he flinches slightly when it was brought close for petting. He tolerated petting on his head and cheeks as well as down and around his body with no further reaction other than lip licking. Pick up was not attempted due to not being able to be coaxed out of the den. 2/3/26 Blizzard was hunched in front of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face slightly tense, ears forward and tail curled lightly around his feet. Blizzard made eye contact with dilated pupils when spoken to and he retreated onto his perch as the kennel door opened. Blizzard allowed petting from his perch while leaning in, arching his back and raising his rear and tail each time the assessor's hand passed along his back. Blizzard was coaxed into his main kennel space when offered treats and he tolerated being lifted and placed back down with tense legs. Blizzard tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He will likely need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior.
