Animal Profile

Tux

Hello, my name is Tux. My animal id is #230580. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 6/27/2025.

Tux is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Since arriving at the Care Center, Tux has become increasingly reactive to other dogs, and is now kennel fighting with dangerous intensity. When entering or exiting his kennel, Tux is noted to pull hard and lunge toward other kennels by pushing off of the kennel room wall. His leash reactivity to dogs has also escalated and has become more difficult to redirect. He is not eligible to be placed in a crate as he is able to break out. During his handling assessment, he was noted to be moderately social with staff, and accepted contact. Medically, Tux is apparently healthy.

My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I am playful and cute! I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals.

Summary:: 7/9/25: Tux greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body. He then disengages and does not greet again.

Summary (5):: 8/6/25: Tux is heavily panting and jumping from side to side in his kennel. He begins jumping up on the kennel door persistently and knocks the kennel cover off his kennel. Tux now begins barking towards the dog next to him.

Summary (6):: 8/3/25: Handler was passing through the room and Tux began jumping up to the bars back and forth. Vocalizing and panting. Handler offers him treats and he takes them firmly through the kennel bars. As handler ends the interaction Tux can be heard panting and vocalizing. 8/3/25: Tux is observed to be kicking her water bucket while in kennel. 8/1/25: It was reported on the behavior board that Tux is lifting the transfer door slightly. 07/26/25: Tux is standing neutral-loose body at front of kennel. He takes treats through kennel door and is easy to leash. Tux exits kennel with moderate leash pulling, head whips toward neighboring kennel but exits kennel room safely (no lunging, growling or barking). Tux maintains neutral-forward body exiting MACC, on side-walk Tux maintains consistent moderate pulling, but is more neutral body. Tux allows petting, takes treats from handler when dropped on ground, checks in for verbal cues. when returning to MACC, Tux shows some visual fixation on MMB exiting MACC driveway with staff member, maintaining line of sight with tense body. Tux is verbally cued, then treats are offered and Tux continues walk back into MACC with neutral body. MACC re-enters kennel room without issue and re-enters kennel, takes treats offered. 07/19/25: Tux is jumping, alert-barking standing at hindlegs moving side to side at front of kennel when handler approaches. Tux is sniffing and moving ignoring the leash. The handler is able to leash Tux on 2nd attempt. When exiting kennel Tux immediately begins intensely fighting with neighboring dog at front of kennel room, hard barking and lunging toward the kennel door. He is muscled away, and begins to pull toward pop-crate outside of Dog-Iso. Leash pressure is used to pull him away. On elevator Tux takes treats, is social with handler. When on sidewalk Tux maintain consistent hard pulling, is forward body, hard panting during the entire walk. He visually fixates on a LMB with staff approximately 25-30 feet away. He does not not take treats when offered. Upon re-entering MACC he does go into kennel smoothly, however it should be noted both of his neighboring kennels are empty at the moment of re-entry. 7/12/25: Tux is jumping and barking at the his kennel door as handler approaches. He continues to jump and bark at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed and he pulls hard out of kennel and pulls towards all the dogs in kennel and tries to lunge towards the kennels by kicking off the wall. He is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would become tense and try to pull towards dogs nearby and across the street. He is able to be redirected with treats. He pulls hard on the way back to kennel and pulls hard towards he dogs in kennels before entering his kennel.

Summary (7):: 7/12/25- It has been observed that when exiting kennel Tux pushes off the walls and cage fights intensely. 7/6/25: It is reported that Tux is focused on other dogs in the kennel room, he will pull towards them and bark. 7/1/25: Tux is residing in a pop-up crate outside of the K9 Behavior office. When staff exit and enter the room he is standing up, tense and whale eyed. He can also be heard howling in the crate. 6/29/25: Tux has a loose and wiggly body in his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed wit ease and is taken outside for a walk. On the walk, he would pull hard ahead and had no reactions to dogs or people. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room he was loose and wiggly and was comfortable being petted. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He baulks to the ground in front of his kennel room, and had to be muscled in to go back into kennel safely.

Date of initial:: 6/29/2025

Summary:: Soft body and slow tail wag

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Tux so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Tux has been observed to become tense while in the possession of a toy. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Tux's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. On Leash Reactivity: Tux has been observed to fixate on the other dog in the kennel room, pull towards them and bark. Tux will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
