Animal Profile

Jodi

Hello, my name is Jodi. My animal id is #102652. I am a desexed female chocolate dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 8 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/25/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Jodi is at risk for behavior reasons. Jodi quickly escalated to snapping at multiple staff during her intake exam. She has been warming up with a slow considerate approach. In the yard she is showing signs of arousal, becoming jumpy and mouthy. We have limited owner information on her behavior in a home. Medically, she is being treated for an ear infection.

Meet Jodi, a 5-year-old female dog with a sweet, gentle soul, she may need a little time to fully warm up. Jodi arrived at the care center with little to known behavior history, so we're taking it slow to get to know her better. At first, she seemed calm, but during her medical exam she escalated to snapping. Since then, she has been slowly building trust with staff members who approach her in a calm and considerate manner. Jodi is still learning to manage her excitement, showing signs of becoming easily aroused, which can make her jumpy and occasionally mouthy. Jodi would do best in a calm, structured environment with someone who can give her the time and patience she needs to flourish into a loving companion.

Summary (7):: 03.30 Jodi stress yawns when the door is opened. She is easily leashed and walks out of the kennel. When passing the last kennel in front of the door, she turns and pulls towards the kennel. She is pulled along and walks out of the building with a loose body. She sniffs the ground to investigate. Jodi is then brought to the yard, and she sniffs around, accepting treats that are offered. When returning to the kennel, she pulls towards the first kennel entering the room while being held on a tight leash. Once she stops, she is given more slack and returns to her kennel, where she is easily unleashed. 3/29 Jodi is at the front of her kennel with a soft body when approached. She is easily roped and taken for a walk. Jodie has a soft body on the walk and approaches familiar staff members with a soft and wiggly body, accepting pets. On the walk, Jodie has a soft body and ignores people passing. When returning to her kennel, she is easily clipped and follows the staff into the kennel and is easily returned. 3/26: Jodi had a low body in the center of her kennel. She has a tense body as the leash is secured. She walks out of the kennel, and her hackles raise. She is brought on a walk and will intermittently look towards the handler or 2nd staff member, remaining tense. Eye contact with her is avoided. When walking back, she tolerates being clipped and is brought into the room. When in front of her kennel, she stops refusing to move into the kennel, which has high-value foods inside. They move to the back of the holding room looking for a toy. Toys are tossed, and the handler attempts to lead her into the kennel, but she low growls. They stand there momentarily, and she eventually decides to go in.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Jodie has been observed to have a medium energy level in the shelter.

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: NO CHILDREN (UNDER 13) Due to fearfulness and potential for defensive aggression we feel that Jodi would do best in an adult only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: BASIC MANNERS/ POOR CONTROL Jodi can be jumpy when interacting with staff. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. FEARFUL/POTENTIAL FOR DEFENSIVE AGGRESSION Jodi gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Jodi, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Jodi to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
