Animal Profile

Grapefruit

Hello, my name is Grapefruit. My animal id is #235850. I am a male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/3/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Grapefruit is at risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. Grapefruit was friendly with staff during his intake, jumping on them in a social manner, tolerated handling, but baulked when he was taken to kennel, a sling was used. He was also reported to be treat receptive during his medical exam. However, throughout his stay, Grapefruit has been reported to be both kennel and on-leash reactive, often observed to get a tense body and lunge at dog and people on the street. As he is either being returned or removed from kennel, Grape fruit will fixate on the other kennels, growl, and push himself of the wall to get closer to the other dogs. Due to his escalating and intense reactivity, he is only being walked on the street as he will hyper fixate on dogs in the yard and is not easily redirected. With handlers, he is often neutral but as of recently will duck behind handlers, pulling towards them, and intensely sniffing them before disengaging. Medically, he is apparently has CIRDC.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

Grapefruit arrived to MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Grapefruit has been observed to be highly dog and people reactive. Noted to lunge towards people and dogs with a tense body and high flagging tail. In the kennel room Grapefruit will fixate on the kennel, growl, and push himself off the wall to get closer to the other dog. This behavior is difficult to redirect. Due to the detailed behavior we recommend an experienced, adult only, single pet home, that makes no trips to the dog park. What my friends at ACC say about me: I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals.

Summary:: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Hard Reactivity to humans: Mild Reactivity to dogs: Mild Leash walking comments: Pulls hard on leash, when seeing dogs will become tense and stares at dogs, attempts to jump on people passing on the street Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Highly social Call over: Approaches readily Sociability comments: Initially tense body, whale eyeing, stays near handlers soliciting attention and treats, table surfs, jumps on handlers Soft handling: Tolerates contact Exuberant handling: Tolerates contact Comments: Tolerates contact, tries to move away when touching flanks Arousal Jog comments: Vocalizes while staring hard at handler, attempts to jump on handler but straight armed away Knock Knock comments: Approaches readily Toy Toy comments: Grips, tense, moves away

Summary:: 9/9/25: Grapefruit greets another dog at the gate with a tense body, growling with hackles raised.

Summary (6):: 9/13/25: Grapefruit is curled up in kennel upon approach. Handler removes the kennel cover and Grapefruit stands up and demand barks and jumps up to the bars. Handler easily leashes him and takes him out of the kennel. He pulls moderately towards the elevator. Handler tosses some treats on the ground and he eats a few of them but ignores the others. Handler tosses a few more and he eats the rest. Grapefruit is then taken towards the street where he begins to duck behind the handler and sniff them intensely, handler uses leash tension to bring him away and to their side, but he ducks back again pulling hard towards the handler. He repeats the behavior, sniffing the handler's treat pouch and handlers leg persistently, several times before disengaging and relieving himself. Grapefruit is then walked back to the shelter, still doing the aforementioned behavior, before being returned to kennel without further issue.

Summary (7):: 9/11/25: It is reported that Grapefruit will charge the front of the kennel when handlers are passing by. 9/10/25: (PM WALKS) ACS reports that Grapefruit would begin to hyper-fixate on dogs in neighboring pens throughout the yard; he isn't easily redirected with either squeaker sounds or treats. A 'street walks only' sign is placed on his kennel shortly after. 9/10/25: Grapefruit has kennel reactivity, both while returning to and leaving the room. When leaving the room, Grapefruit would fixate on the kennels and growl at them. When returning, Grapefruit would fixate on the kennels and push himself off of the wall to get closer. 9/6/25 (late entry)- ACS reported that Grapefruit gets a tense body and lunges at dogs and people. 9/5/25- Grapefruit is laying down with a neutral body when handler approaches, he is easily leashed. He is taken for a street walk, when trying to go another direction in the drive way away from another dog Grapefruit pulls very hard exiting and doesn't notice the other dog that is barking at him. He continuously pulls hard throughout the walk being hypervigilant (tail tucked, zig zagging, looking around). MOPs approach handler and Grapefruit pulls away in different directions. When another persons passes he pulls hard towards them and handler has to tug him away. When a dog passes him in the street he looks at them with a slight tense body with a high tail. Handler calls to him and presents a treat, he comes to handler and gently takes it. He is taken for his assessment where he is neutral with handlers and is easily collared with a treat lure. He comes to handler when called and takes more treats, he plays with a toy. Handler asks him to drop it and he does, handler tosses a treat and he catches it. He is easily re-leashed and returned to kennel without issue.

Date of intake:: 9/3/2025

Summary:: Jumping socially on handler, accepting treats, when brought to kennel frozen/tense belly banded in

Date of initial:: 9/4/2025

Summary:: Greets staff socially, tail tucked for muzzle placement, warms up with food

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Grapefruit so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No Children: Due to Grapefruit's exuberant nature paired with his low threshold for arousal, we recommend a home with no children. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend a single pet home that makes no trips the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: When interacting with Grapefruit with a toy in his mouth he will become tense and freeze up with a high flagged tail. We recommend that Grapefruit be left alone while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Grapefruit's mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners/Poor Impulse Control: During his assessment Grapefruit was observed to jump on handlers and table surf. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Fearful: During the early portions of his assessment, Grapefruit displayed a tense and nervous demeanor and whale eyed handlers at times. It is important to always go slow and give Grapefruit the option to walk away from any social interaction. Grapefruit should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Grapefruit’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Grapefruit would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Grapefruit has been observed to lunge towards people and dogs with a tense body and high flagging tail. In the kennel room Grapefruit will fixate on the other kennels, growl, and push himself of the wall to get closer to the other dogs. Grapefruit will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Low Threshold for Arousal: When engaging in the jogging portion of the assessment Grapefruit was observed to stare tensely at handler while following and jumps toward handler. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Grapefruit to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Grapefruit. Please see handout on Arousal.
