Baby
Hello, my name is Baby. My animal id is #214739. I am a female gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/15/2024.
Baby is at risk due to behavior concerns. Baby was brought to the Care Center after being reported as reactive in her previous home, though no specific details were provided. At the Care Center, Baby is social with staff and occasionally accepts treats. She has shown reactivity towards other dogs and was reported to engage in kennel fighting. Recently, due to the stress of the shelter environment, Baby has been observed scratching and biting her kennel door, despite receiving ample enrichment. Medically, Baby is currently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me.

When exiting the elevator there was a dog to the right, the other handler goes into a closet and handler with Baby moved her to their other side, when walking pass Baby pulled hard towards the other dog causing her to pass out. Handler waited momentarily and Baby got back up. She pulled hard on the street, sniffing all over. Handler begins tossing treats on the floor to direct Baby forward but she ignores them initially, turning back towards handler. She is walked to the street and pulls moderately when outside, stopping frequently to sniff. After a while she is brought back to the building. She begins to bark at handler as they unlock the kennel door and attempts to push her head out of kennel when being leashed. She is taken to the street for her walk once brought out of her room. While on the street she pulls moderately and stops frequently to sniff areas on the street. She uses the bathroom outside and pulls towards dogs she sees on the street with low intensity and a neutral body. She is brought to the office after her walk for an assessment. She repeats the actions above and is eventually able to be leashed. She is walked in the yard where she is aloof, sniffing the environment. When passing a pen with another dog in it, she is tense body and has to be called away. Once away from the other dog she resumes sniffing. ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Baby so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to defensive behaviors we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Owner reported defensive behaviors. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Baby to new and unfamiliar situations. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
