Pre-Screener Form

Jamil is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Jamil has been observed to be dog reactive and have a low threshold for arousal. Jamil has been observed to vocalize and pull towards dogs with a tense body. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily using treats or squeakie sounds. Jamil has also been observed to mount handlers. One event when a handler straight armed Jamil in an attempt to get him off. Jamil jumped towards their face with an open mouth and bared teeth. Medically Jamil is apparently healthy.

I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

He follows treats tossed by second handler forward to continue his walk. After a bit he stops to use the bathroom and continues forward, pulling moderately. After walking for a while handler begins bringing Jamil back, he again attempts to jump on handler but is straight armed away. He returns inside and follows more treats back to kennel and returns without further issue. 5/12/25: Jamil is at the front of the kennel jumping up on the door when the handler approached. He is easily leashed using a treat lure and taken to the yard. Handler tosses a toy when he exits kennel and he is not receptive. Jamil continued to repeatedly tried to mount. Jamil attempted to mount the staff again, the staff straight armed him, he then began to jump towards the staff member's face with an open mouth and teeth bared. The staff member straight arming Jamil more and applied strong pressure to the leash to get Jamil to stop due to the intensity. Treats were not able to redirect him in the moment. After, Jamil was returned to his kennel without further issue. 5/8/25: Jamil is standing at the front of kennel with a loose body as handler approaches. He is easily leashed using a treat as a lure, and removed from kennel. He jumps out of the room on his hind leg. In the driveway and on the street, Jamil will turn towards handler to attempt to mount their leg. He clasps handlers thigh and handler has to straight arm him. He is redirected momentarily using treats, but handler has to continuously straight arm and maneuver the leash. He is returned to kennel without further issue. 5/2/25: It is reported by staff that Jamil is continuing to persistently mount them without any clear provocation. 4/30/25: Jamil is laying on his Kuranda bed asleep when the handler approaches. He occasionally jumps up on the handler, the handler turns their body away and rewards other behaviors offered such as "sits" or four on the floor. As the handler in walking down the street Jamil jumps up and then wraps his arms around the handlers leg. This behavior is able to be redirected easily using treats and verbal cues. As the handler is walking back to the shelter Jamil begins to mount the handler more and more frequently. Treats begin to become less of a distraction, Jamil begins to look for treats on the ground while mounting the handler. The handler straight arms Jamil and walks him on a short leash. Jamil attempts to mount the handler two more times but is unable to reach them due to the short leash. The rest of the walk back to kennel is uneventful. Jamil returns to kennel with no issue.

He jumps on handler and they have him sit, he gently takes treats from their hand. He has a moderate to hard pull at times to sniff various spots. He allows handler to pet his head and neck. He has no reaction to any stimuli. When returning in the driveway there are ACS staff. He greets them with a soft body and tries to jump on them. Handler has him sit and he is rewared. He is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 4/10/25: Jamil is sitting at the front of his kennel when handler approaches. He is easily leashed and taken to the play-yard where he would moderately pull towards the door. Handler would take Jamil around the perimeter a few times as he would constantly stop to relieve himself. Handler then takes Jamil into a pen where he is sniffing around and being social with handler. Jamil spots a dog in the pen over and would pull hard towards them, handler allowed Jamil to approach the fence where he then begins to scratch at the bottom of the fence. Handler pulls Jamil away and offers him a treat for going in a sit position. Jamil then relieves himself again and begins to dart back and forth on the leash, he quickly attempted to mount the handler, which Jamil was then straight-armed away as he then starts ‘hip-thrusting’ the air. Shortly after, Jamil is then taken back inside, he is then clipped and returned to kennel without any issues. 4/9/25: It is reported on the behavior board that JAmil is erratic on leash, jumping and pulling, foaming at the mouth. 3/21/25: It is reported by staff that when petted, Jamil will jump onto handler wrapped around their legs and mounts the handler.

Jamil allows pets under his chin which he leans into slightly and afterwards jumps on handler before settling and continuing walking. Jamil walks past people on the street without issue but will fixate on dogs while outside even across the street, he is able to be redirected with a squeaker. After walking for a while Jamil is brought back to the shelter, allows leash clipping and returns to kennel with treats tossed and without issue. 3/11/15: Jamil was standing in his bottom kennel when the handler approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he pushes his head into the gap. easily leashed and taken out to the yard; he walks with a tucked tail and relieves himself before going into the pen. No issue putting on a drag leash, and he sniffs around the yard before stopping to stand still for photos. The handler goes over to the bench and calls him over - he walks over immediately and slowly climbs up onto the bench. Receives gentle pets without issue. A volunteer is in the next pen engaging in exuberant play with another dog, he watches from the bench but does not otherwise react or vocalize. When the handler gets up, he immediately goes over to the gate, seeking exit. Easily leashed and exits the pen - he pulls to go further in the yard and is walked around the perimeter while sniffing. Looks at dog while passing its pen but does not stop, pull towards, vocalize, or otherwise interact with it. at the end of the yard he stops to sniff and then dedicates, before walking back into the building. No issue re-entering kennel. 3/10/25: Jamil is siting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and pulled on the way outside for a walk. Summary:: Allowed handling

Date of initial:: 3/10/2025

Summary:: Body relaxed; easily examined; tail tucked under

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Jamil so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity and a low threshold for arousal we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: On leash reactivity: Jamil has been observed to vocalize and pull towards dogs with a tense body. This behavior is not able to be redirected easily using treats or squeaky sounds. Jamil will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Low Threshold Arousal: Jamil has been observed to mount handlers. This behavior is not able to be easily redirected. When a handler straight armed Jamil he began to jump towards their face with an open mouth and bared teeth. Jamil should be rewarded with treats when calm. If they escalate to jumping or mounting, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Jamil. Please see handout on Arousal.
