Summary:: Underdog arrived at MACC following a bite incident. On July 5th Underdog’s owners stated that he bit their family member. Underdog was loose walking around a gate outside. Underdog then bit the family member on the left hand leaving puncture wounds on the lower edge of the hand. This bite was a bite and release. As the family member pulled away from Underdog, other family members closed the gate to separate them. The victim went to Jacobi Medical Center for medical treatment. During intake Underdog was reported to have a loose body and wagging tail. Due to the bite incident, Underdog is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 7/18/25: Underdog was laying in front of his kennel, as handler approached and began to unlock his kennel door, he got up and was easily leashed. He walked straight out the room and walked alongside handler nicely all the way into main medical. A muzzle was placed on him which he tolerated nicely as his fluid treatment was being done. He remained with soft neutral body throughout the interaction. Allowing soft pets on his face and body. Also accepting a small plate of wet food as a treat. He was then walked back to his kennel without issue. 7/7/25: Underdog is standing at the front of the kennel with a neutral body when the handler approaches. The handler offers treats and he is receptive taking the treats with a soft mouth. The handler gives Underdog an enrichment item and he begins to engage with it. Handler ends interaction.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Underdog so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the bite history we recommend an experienced adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Underdog's previous owner states that he will become tense and hover over toys that are in his possession. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Underdog's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Underdog's previous owner states that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity: Underdog's previous owner states that he will become fearful when his paws are touched. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Underdog to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Fearful Defensive/Bite History (Human): Please see bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
