Animal Profile

Freddy

Hello, my name is Freddy. My animal id is #251708. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 4/10/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Freddy is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have lived with cats in my previous home. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Freddy was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/16/26 FB79 At the front of the kennel, Freddy is perched with his paws tucked his ears forward and his eyes low; when I entered the kennel he remained still and tolerated all petting with the tool on his head and back while it started to ripple. When I used my hand however he pulled away and his tail slightly wrapped tighter around his body. 4/22/26 FB61 Lying on bed, body and face tense with his ears tilted. He remains very still as I open the cubby door and he maintains eye contact with tilted ears as I speak to him. He grumbles throughout our interaction and tolerates cheek rubs with the scratcher tool while hissing and flattening his ears further. I leave him some treats and when I check on him later I see they have been eaten. 4/29/2026 In cat den upon approach, body and face relaxed with his head lowered onto his front paws. He raises his head and hisses when the kennel door opens, then tolerates some petting on his head while flattening his ears, leaning away and then hissing one more time. 5/2/26 Vol. Freddy- hissed before I even opened the kennel door. I didn't go any further.  5/4/26 FB06 As I peek into the kennel, Freddy is hissing. I open the kennel door and Freddy continues to hiss as he moves from a lying position into a crouched position, turning his ears outward. I offer him the scratcher, he continues to hiss but briefly stops to sniff the scratcher. When I attempt to pet his head he swats the scratcher. I place some squeeze up in a tray in front of him which he enjoys immediately. I attempt to pet him again with scratcher but he swats it each time and attempt is made. 5/06/26 FB26 Sitting upright in front of cubby, body and face tense with his tail wrapped around his body. He hisses with flat ears as I open the kennel door and he maintains eye contact as I offer him treats. He remains in front of his cubby as I slowly close the door and he begins to eat the treats as I walk out of his line of sight. He steps closer and watches me as I make my way around the room, hissing and slow-blinking each time I pass by him. He does not retreat into any of his hiding spots however, which makes me think he may be waiting for treats! 5/11/26 FB06 I am greeted with hisses as I am unlocking the kennel. As I open the door, Freddy is perching himself up, hissing, flattens his ears and starts to low growl. I hen place a tray of squeeze up near him and he immediately leans forward and begins to eat it. As I attempt to pet his head with the scratcher, he lifts his body up, swats and hisses at the scratcher. 5/14/26 FB79 Freddy was at the front of the kennel when I lifted the kennel cover; he immediately hissed and when I started to unlocked the kennel he stood backing uo with an arched back low tail and his ears titled. He continued to hiss harshly and did not tolerate any contact with the tool as he kept hissing and backing away with a tense body. GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyers for more information. Freddy came from a home with several other cats - it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach, Freddy is curled up at the back of the ledge, face and eyes are neutral, ears are forward, tail is wrapped around his body, and his front paws are tucked under. As the kennel door opens, he remains calm. Slowly offering the scratcher, Freddy watches it as it nears him. He leans his head slightly forward and gently sniffs. As the assessor gives him pets on the head, he is tolerant, ears turn outward and remains in the same position. As the scratcher is moved along his back, he turns his head slowly and watches the scratcher. He then turns his head back slowly and watches the assessor’s hand as he tolerates a few more pets, as he begins to low growl. No pick up was attempted at this time. 5/13/26 FB61 Freddy was hunched in the front of his kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense with his tail wrapped tightly around his body. Freddy made eye contact when spoken to, his ears completely flattened and he hisses louder as the kennel door opens. Freddy maintains eye contact as the assessor reaches towards him with the scratcher tool and he swats it before it can make contact with his head. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Freddy is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat / scratch / bite and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment. Freddy does not currently tolerate petting or handling and he appears to be deteriorating in the shelter environment. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
