Animal Profile

Lavender

Hello, my name is Lavender. My animal id is #249639. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/2/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person health - medical.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Lavender is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: Lavender tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He/she may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue

KNOWN HISTORY:: Lavender was brought in from a hoarding situation with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Lavender is crouched on top of the ledge, eyes and face neutral, ears are forward. As the scratcher slowly approaches, he gently sniffs. Attempting to pet his head, he begins to back up, ducking and dodging the scratcher. Now at the back of the ledge, crouched in the corner, I offer the scratcher again. He leans his head slightly forward and sniffs again. He attempts to duck and dodge again but as he moves his head down low, he allows for some head and body pets. 4/09/26 FB61 Lying in hidey box, body and face neutral upon initial approach. When I open the kennel door he hisses and flattens his ears while maintaining eye contact, so I don’t push it further. I leave him some squeeze-ups and when I close the kennel door he steps all the way forward to eat the treats immediately. Will continue to build positive associations! 4/10/26 FB79 Inside of the box, Lavender hissed at soon as I enter the kennel; he had wide eyes and forward ears but his tail and body where out of side. He continued to hiss as I spoke to him until I started to slow blink which he began lip licking and looking around the box. When the tool was brought in he hissed harshly and pulled away/ ducked and dodged when I attempted petting. After holding the tool still for a moments he lowered his head and allowed petting on his head with no eye contact or reaction. 4/14/26 FB61 In hidey box upon approach, body and face neutral with his ears forward. He peeks at me through his hidey box opening and he hisses softly as I open the kennel door. He is tolerant of all cheek pets while softening his face slightly and remaining otherwise wary and focused on the room. He eats the treats offered immediately after receiving a puree reward. Will continue to build positive associations. 4/18/26 FB06 Lavender is peeking though the opening in his box with a neutral face and eyes, ears are forward. As I offered him the scratcher he sniffed gently. He allowed for head pets, even leaning in slightly, especially behind the ears. He allowed for some body pets as he watched me through the opening. I moved his bowl of dry food (I was going to try offering my hand) and he hissed, still with a neutral face. 4/24/26 Vol. Lavender hissed when approached with a Churu treat. He remained lying in his box initially but emerged to eat once I walked away. He continued to hiss when approached closely, though he did not retreat back into the box. 4/27/26 FB79 Lavender displayed the same behaviors displayed in the previous enrichment note. 5/2/26 Vol. would not let me near him. Hissed as soon as I opened kennel door. Not interested in treats.  GAN

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: inside of a box, Lavender peaks his head when the assessor opens the kennel door and greets him; he had forward ears and wide/dilated eyes. When the assessor started to pull the box forward he quickly jumped out to the top part of the kennel where he sat with with his tail tightly wrapped and his ears now tilted. He had no care for treats that were tossed near him and focus on the assessor as they spoke softly. When the tool was brought close he started to look around the kennel in attempt to escape and avoid contact. He did not tolerate pets when contact was made on his head and he jumped down with a low body/tail retreating into the cubby. Pick up was not attempted at this time. 5/4/26 Lavender continues to avoid contact when approached; inside of his box he hissed when the assessor greeted him. His eyes wide and his ears forward until the tool was used to pet the top of his head - his ears tilted then flattened to his head before he harshly pulled away. When the tool ran down his body he had no reaction but became interest in a tray of treats that was placed near his godly box. Lavender leaned out enough to sniff and start to enjoy but quickly pulled away and hissed when the tool was used to pet while he ate. His body out his side but his eyes remained wide/dilated and his ears tilted. Lavender tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He/she may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children.
