Animal Profile

Clementine

Hello, my name is Clementine. My animal id is #218204. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 1/7/2025.

Clementine is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Clementine has begun to deteriorate despite best efforts to keep her comfortable while in care. Clementine has been highly social with staff and handlers, engaging in enrichment games, seeking attention or treats, and engaging with toys. She is consistently jumping up, jumping to the top of her kennel, and ping-ponging off her kennel walls when the room is active. Clementine has also been reported to nip a handler's hand and arm when coming out of the kennel. Medically, Clementine is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy!

Other Notes:: On 1/15/25, Clementine went on an adoption interaction. Clementine was brought into the dog pen area for an adoption interaction. Clementine had lots of energy and ran around/had zoomies. After a few minutes, Clementine calmed down to smell and explore the pen a bit more. Clementine smells the potential adopter's hand and then got aroused and becomes mouthy. She applied hard pressure on her right hand and also mouthed at the adopter's jacket. In the process of the adopter pulling back their arm/jacket, Clementine scratched their wrist. It broke skin, leaving a mark about 1/2 inch in diameter. The potential adopter stated they weren't going to seek medical attention. Staff was able to redirect Clementine with treats and immediately ended the interaction and she was returned to her kennel easily with treats.

Summary:: Due to Clementine entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 03/26/25: When off leash at the Care Center is introduced to a novel female dog. At the gate Clementine approaches with a neutral frame. Both dogs scent one another at the gate. The novel female displays a loose and wiggly frame as she offers play bows. Clementine mirror's the same behavior, chattering while doing so. Clementine begins to grow in frustration pacing the gate. When both dogs are separated from the gate, Clementine will plant down refusing to be moved from the gate, this will conclude the interaction. 3/14/25: Clementine is at the front of the gate when meeting a novel male dog, and greets the novel male with a loose body, offering play bows and displaying loose, curved bouncy bodies on both sides. Clementine is introduced off leash where they begin to circle and scent each other, with Clementine inviting play with exaggerated movement, play bowing and mouthing the other dog. The male dog begins to to initially interact and initiate play, but begins to displace and lip lick. Clementine was then separated from the male dog and the interaction was ended.

Summary (4):: 03/27/25: Consistently jumping and ping-pong-ing off walls when the room is active. Also seen finger painting on multiple occasions 03/26/25 (Trainer Note): Clementine was at the front of her kennel as the trainer approached and began to jump. She sat down as the door was opened and was easily leashed and pulled moderately to the Live Room. When inside she was clipped to a drag leash and she began to jump at the counter and was rewarded for all four paws on the floor. Clementine was shown that the treats are in the snuffle mats and she began to engage. After moving between items, for several rounds, she was able to orient to the handler in-between. Clementine was then leashed and taken back to her kennel without issue.

Summary (5):: 3/20/25: ACS reports Clementine started to nip the handle hand and their arm when coming out of kennel. 03/19/25 (trainer note): Clementine is standing at the front of her kennel with a loose body and tail wag. She is easily leashed and strongly pulls to the behavior office. When loose in the room, she enthusiastically runs around to explore the room and greet the other staff members. She is panting and has a loose body and tail. She engages with the various enrichment items around the room and is rewarded when she orients towards the handler. Throughout the session she begins to check in with the handler more often and was able to incorporate "sit" and "take a breath". When attempting to leash Clementine to go back to her kennel, she began to jump up on handler and mouth the leash and handler's sleeve. The other staff members used a squeaky toy to redirect Clementine's attention and from there she was able to be leashed and return to kennel 3/19: Clementine could be seen jumping up repeatedly in her kennel. 3/13/25: Clementine offered a sit in middle of kennel before coming forward to be leashed with ease. She walked to the BA room where she was clipped to a drag leash. Clementine was loose and bouncy throughout the interaction. She engaged with a lick mat and was highly social with handlers. Clementine jumped up resting her front paws on handler's lap and leaned into pets. She was returned to kennel with ease. 3/9: Clementine could be seen repeatedly jumping to the top of her kennel. 03/05/25 (trainer note): Clementine is standing at the front of her kennel with her tail wagging and on her hind legs. She is easily leashed and walked to the live room with mild pulling. She enthusiastically engages with the puzzle toys and snuffle matts provided with tail wagging and a loose body. She takes treats from hand roughly, but by the end of session when more calm became gentler. "Take a breath" was attempted, however Clementine was too aroused and would jump up from "sit" position and try to grab the treats. Handler proceeded with continued use of puzzle toys and snuffle matts to end the interaction on a positive note. Leashed and returned to kennel with ease. 3/3/25: Seen barking jummping repeatedly during rounds and will lunge at kennel door when hand is near

Summary (6):: 02/27/25: Clementine is loose and wiggly at the front of her kennel as she greets the handler and is leashed with ease. She is escorted to the live room for enrichment, where she immediately engages with a soft squeaky duck. She also explores the snuffle mat and engages with a Kong toy. Throughout the session, Clementine catches zoomies, running from wall to wall and attempting to jump into the handler’s lap. She remains extremely excited, loose, and wiggly while interacting with the handler. Once enrichment concludes, Clementine is safely returned to her kennel with no issues. 02/23/25 Clementine is lying down as the handler approaches. The handler will leash Clementine with ease as she walks into the loop of the lead. They proceed outside to the play pens. She will pull her way out side with a loose, wiggly body. Clementine is exuberant, sitting quickly when soliciting treats. She will be rewarded for her sits as she takes treats gently when administered. Upon arriving in the play pens, Clementine will explore. The handler and her will engage in some treat games, such as "find it" tossing a treat and having her retrieve it. Clementine is eventually taken back to kennel where they will enter the facility with no issue. Clementine will quickly enter her kennel as she arrives. 02/09/25: Clementine is sitting upright in the middle of her kennel, looking up at the handler upon arrival. She will allow the handler to leash her with ease and will be brought to the live room for enrichment. Once a drag leash is placed on her, Clementine will excitedly run around the room, engaging with the snuffle mat before seeking the handler’s attention by jumping up on them. She will take some time to explore the room before being safely leashed and escorted back to her kennel with no issues 01/28/25 Clementine is sitting in her kennel with a relaxed body and wagging tail. The handler lashes her with ease, taking her to the play yard. She displays a relaxed, neutral frame as she moderately cruises to the play yards. Clementine enters the pen, exploring and scanning her surroundings. She remains soft and relaxed, leaning in to get pet. She will take treats gently when administered as well as collecting them from the ground. Clementine is returned to kennel, entering the facility and her kennel with no issue.

Summary (7):: 1/19/25 Clementine is in her crate, stiff and hard barking at the handler as they approach. The handler kneels down and speaks to her in a high pitch voice. The handler unlocks the crate door and she stops hard barking, allowing the handler to guide the loop of the lead onto their neck. She is taken to the training room as she quickly darts towards the door. As she enters, she is a bit weary of the handler, whipping their head to look at them constantly. The handler manages to get a drag leash onto her as she allows it, remaining really stiff and tense but loosening up once it was on. Clementine will engage with the handler, offering the handler bounces and play bows. She is administered high value treats in which she takes roughly. She will greet another handler that is present, with a loose body as well as a wagging tail. Clementine will sit when cued, remaining still, sitting firmly. Clementine is administered a toy she will toss around, only for a few seconds. Clementine is returned back to her crate where she will allow the handler to leash her as she is administered a treat through the loop of the lead. She returns back to her crate entering with no issue. 1/11: Clementine went on an adoption interaction. interaction took place on the sidewalk. Clementine was very energetic and jumpy throughout the interaction towards all active parties, including the child who was being held. The potential adopter was able to walk her as she was very social, however, she did become mouthy towards the end when being petted. The mouthiness had a good amount of pressure to it so the counselor advised to no longer pet the Clementine. Interaction was ended. 01/09/25: Clementine is lying down in her kennel and will display a loose and wiggly body as the handler approaches to leash her. She is easily leashed and escorted to the assessment room, where a drag leash is placed on her, allowing her to roam freely. Once loose, Clementine will immediately seek the handler’s attention, jumping up and curling into a ball on their lap when they sit down. She happily accepts petting and leans into the handler’s touch. Clementine will engage with a soft toy, tossing it around briefly before settling down to chew on it quietly. After her enrichment session, Clementine is safely re-leashed and escorted back to her kennel without any issues

Recommendations comments:: No children ( under 13)- Due to Clementine's mouthiness and high levels of jumping we recommend she is placed in a home an adult-only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control- Clementine jumps up non-stop, indicating a need for training to improve her impulse control and basic manners. Consistent training to teach her to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition- Clementine displayed mouthy behavior lightly mouthing the handler. To address Clementine's mouthiness and improve her bite inhibition, start by redirecting her mouthing behavior to appropriate chew toys whenever she begins to mouth a handler. Use positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, when she engages with the toys instead of mouthing people. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Bite history (human)- During an adoption interaction Clementine has the zoomies around the yard. After a few minutes, Clementine calmed down to smell and explored the pen a bit more. Clementine smelled the potential adopters' hand and then got excited again and became mouthy. She applied hard pressure on her right hand and also mouthed at their jacket. When the potential adopter pulled back their arm/jacket, Clementine scratched their wrist, it broke skin leaving a mark about 1/2 inch in diameter. The Potential adopter stated that they weren't going to seek medical attention. Staff were able to redirect Clementine with treats and immediately ended the interaction.
