Animal Profile

Currywurst

Hello, my name is Currywurst. My animal id is #238521. I am a desexed female black brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/5/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Currywurst is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Currywurst arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake Currywurst allowed all handling and petting. Currywurst was also noted to warm up quickly and become social with staff. However, despite efforts to keep Currywurst comfortable, she is showing a concerning decreased threshold for arousal. Currywurst has been reported to be jumping on to handlers, mouthing, and leash biting. Recently, Currywurst was observed to become highly aroused when on leash fixating on another dog; Currywurst began darting back and forth, turn, jump towards handler and leash bit. In the same instance, Currywurst bit, held, and shook the handler's pant leg (no contact with skin). A secondary handler was required to return Currywurst to kennel safely. Medically Currywurst is apparently healthy.

Noted to spin towards the handler and mouth them after leaving the kennel room. During one instance after seeing a dog Curry spun towards the handler and began leash biting. Curry then bit, held, and shook the handlers pant leg. Due to the detailed behaviors we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

Date of intake:: 10/5/2025

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history

Date of assessment:: 10/7/2025

Summary:: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: Mild Reactivity to humans: None Reactivity to dogs: None Leash walking comments: Aloof Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): Fearful Call over: Approaches handler with coaxing Sociability comments: Flinches away from quick movements, tense body initially, warms up with treats and squeakie sounds Soft handling: Tolerates contact Exuberant handling: Tolerates contact Comments: Pulls away from tension on collar Arousal Jog comments: Follows handler readily Knock Knock comments: Approaches handle readily, soft body Toy Toy comments: Grips light, relinquishes

Summary:: 10/15/25: Currywurst greets another dog at the gate with a loose and wiggly body. Off leash, she engages in rough and rowdy play, jumping and pushing herself off the other dog's back, all while remaining loose.

Summary (6):: 11/3/2025 (Trainer Note): CurryWurst was observed to fixate on a dog in the driveway, he had a loose body but began to dart back and forth on leash, turned towards handler, and began jumping up very high towards them. He quickly escalated to leash biting, and then bite, held, and shook (briefly) onto the handlers pants legs. Handler continued straight arming him. K9 behavior assisted in returning him to kennel as he was found planting in front of his room. As a sling was placed under his belly, he head whipped towards handler with an open mouth. 10/25/25: Currywurst is at the front of the kennel as handler approaches. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel where she would have a mild pull ahead of the handler, not showing interest in the neighboring kennels. In the elevator she would jump up onto the handler and a treat is tossed on the floor next to her. Once out on the street, she would continue a mild pull ahead of the handler, constantly checking in throughout the walk. As she would spot a dog, she would watch them with a neutral body but is easily redirected using a treat and a squeaker sound. Shortly after, she is then brought back and she would baulk in front of the room and begin to roll on her side refusing to walk. A squeaker toy is tossed ahead and she would follow, then readily walk into her kennel. DZ 10/21/25: Currywurst is observed to be jumping with neutral body upward and briefly leash bit while being taken out by ACS, waiting by elevator. On elevator, secondary handler was able to get Currywurst into sit, but he would jump with soft body at first.

Summary (7):: 10/19/25: It was noted on the whiteboard that Currywurst is "jumpy and mouthy, needed a toy". 10/19/25: Currywurst is reported by staff to have jumped up and mouthed their handlers forearm after exiting their holding room. Currywurst did not escalate and continued the walk without further issue. 10/18/25: Currywurst is sleeping as handler approaches (the room is notably loud), she stands as kennel door is unlocked, takes treats through kennel door, is easily leashed. Currywurst exits with loose leash, on elevator sits for treats. On sidewalk Currywurst is soft bodied, loose leash. Currywurst sits for treats, checks in for verbal cues. Three SMBs being walked by MOP approach on side of sidewalk. Currywurst stares, one of the SMB begins to hardbark and lunge toward Currywurst, Currywurst is verbally cued into a sit, takes treats as the the SMBs pass, including the highly reactive one that passes within 5 feet of Currywurst. Currywurst stays in sit position takes treats, when resuming walk Currywurst looks back at the three SMBs briefly but is neutral bodied and resumes walking on loose leash. Upon walking back to MACC, Curry drops on her back, belly up, begins wiggling on ground with tongue out, treat is presented and Currywurst stands and resumes walk. When re-entering kennel room Currywurst baulks at doorway, treats lure her a step forward but baulks again, once Currywurst is pulled through the doorway, she walking into kennel and re-enters safely, takes treats in kennel. 10/7/25: Currywurst is curled up in the back of her kennel as handler approaches - as she looks at the handler she would sit up and readily come to the front of her kennel with a soft and wiggly body. She is then easily leashed and taken for a street walk where she would have a mild pull ahead of the handler. She would begin to pull hard towards people on the street and also would pull hard towards spots to sniff and relieve herself. She would spot a dog and continue to walk forward with a neutral body, not looking in the dogs direction afterwards. She is then brought back inside for her assessment, where she would remain social with the handler and allow collaring with ease. She is then re-leashed and taken back to her kennel where she would baulk in front of and has to be slightly muscled in. 10/7/25: It was reported that Currywurst had to be bellybanded into his kennel. He baulked outside of the room. One handler spoke to him in a baby voice and he walked a few steps, but then baulked again. Currywurst allowed them to belly band him and returned him to kennel

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Currywurst so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no young children. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity and the potential for redirection we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Currywurst has been observed to flinch for quick movements and will baulks while on leash. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Currywurst would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity/ Leash Biting: Curry is obsvered to spin towards the handler and mouth their arm after exiting the kennel room. During another instance after seeing a dog Curry spin towards the handler began leash biting then bit, held, and shook their pants leg. Curry will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
