Summary:: Kalie has been observed to be fearful while in care. Noted to have a tense body, pinned back ears, and will dodge the leash when handlers attempt to leash her. Due to the high level of fear, stress, and anxiety, Kalie is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary:: According to Kalie's previous owner(s), Kalie has no experience with other dogs. 9/8/26: Kalie is introduced to a novel intact male and stands at the entrance of the yard, not approaching. She slowly walks in and is neutral at the fence, then disengages and lies down nearby the fence. The meet is cut short due to medical reasons.

Summary (6):: 9/6/26: Kalie is standing at the front of the kennel with wide eyes and a slightly tense body. Handler tosses her some high value treats and she does not take them. Handler unlocks the kennel and presents the leash. Kalie moves forward and handler attempts to place the leash over her head. Kalie ducks away and retreats to the back. She whale eyes the handler and lip licks as the leash gets closer to her head. Handler makes attempts as Kalie approaches the front to leash her. She repeats the behavior and backs up avoiding the leash. Handler grabs a squeaky toy and uses the squeaker to get her attention. She is then leashed successfully with a pre-clipped leash and walks with the handler out towards the backyard. Kalie walks around the back yard, entering pens and sniffing around. Handler calls towards her in an attempt to engage with her but she does not respond and will occasionally look at the handler with a whale eye. Kalie is then slowly brought back towards the shelter. She begins to baulk and handler coaxes her forward by saying "come on" and applying leash pressure. Kalie is walked back towards her kennel. She refuses to enter her kennel and plants. A toy is tossed inside and she does not follow. Handler has to muscle her into the kennel. 9/5/26: Kalie is standing at the front of her kennel with wide eyes when the handler approaches. She does not take a treat through the kennel bars or when it is dropped. When the door is opened, she retreats to the back and is trembling and lifting a paw. The handler is able to slowly lasso her and secure the leash. The handler stands with the door open wide for a while, tossing treats. After a few spurts of leash pressure, Kalie exits kennel and pulls hard going outside with a lowered body. She is generally aloof in the yard and independently sniffs. She pulls towards dogs with a neutral body and perked ears, easily vocally redirected. She does not take treats outside. She stands leaning into the handler's legs when they sit on the bench and curls inward for butt scratches. She allows pets on her back remaining neutral, then continues leaning into butt scratches. She continues independently exploring but begins showing signs of stress, yawning, lip licking, and exit searching. She is non reactive to the leash being clipped and is brought back inside, pulling strongly towards her kennel, then plants refusing go inside. Treats are tossed and the handler attempts to coax her but ultimately needs to muscle her in. Kallie is non reactive and the leash is removed without issue. She does not take a treat dropped in her kennel.

Summary (7):: 9/5/26: Kalie is standing at the front of kennel. Handler opens kennel door and Kalie moves to the back with a tense body, ears back and head down and sits and looks at handler. Handler is able to get the leash loop around Kalie who then starts to thrash and the leash falls off. Kalie is shaking, giving the handler side eye. Handler decides to leave her and try again later. -TE 9/4/26 (PM): Kalie is sitting at the front of her kennel with whale eyes as the handler approaches; they drop treats into her kennel, but she shows no interest. The handler slowly opens the kennel and brings the leash inside; as they attempt to leash Kalie, she dodges her head a few times. Kalie then retreats to the back of her kennel; the handler drops high value treats, but she shows no interest, eventually lying down. The handler leashes Kalie with a pole leash and opens the kennel door wide, but Kalie doesn't come forward, as she remains lying down with whale eyes. After a couple minutes, The handler closes the door and removes the leash from Kalie with a hook. The interaction is ended.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Kalie is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Kalie.

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Kalie's previous owner states that she will have a tense body and will hover over food and treats. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Kalie's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful: Kalie has been observed to be fearful when handlers approach. Noted to hard stare, lip lick, and dodge the leash. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Kalie would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Kalie's previous owner states that she will jump towards bikes and scooters while on walks. During intake Kalie was observed to lunge at strangers that were walking past. Kalie will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than people and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Kalie's previous owner states that she will pull hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
