Animal Profile

Ru

Hello, my name is Ru. My animal id is #248786. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/3/2026.

Ru is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Ru arrived at the Care Center as a stray with limited history. It was reported Ru was found in a home with another dog, abandoned for several days without food or water. Both dogs were found with several bite wounds. During intake and handling assessment, Ru allowed all contact, was social with staff, and was treat motivated. Ru has not acclimated to the shelter environment well. Ru has begun consistently leash biting when handlers attempt to remove him from kennel and been observed to persistently bite kennel bars. Outside of kennel Ru remains social with staff, treat receptive, and walks well on leash. Medically, Ru is noted to have bite wounds that are healing, is underweight, and recently recovered from CIRDC.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I need a home where there are no other dogs. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! One of my volunteers says that on March 21st, I walked ahead of staff with mild leash pulling. Due to me being an underweight boy I understandably was very focused on treats, and I would sit patiently, holding a sitting position calmly until the treat was given. I took treats politely, and I am a good boy. I was friendly and wiggly with tail wags, but was also able to stay calm while they were chatting. I enjoyed petting, especially butt scratches!

Summary (6):: 3/28/26: Ru is at the front of his kennel, jumping on the kennel door; as the handler places the lock on the door, Ru bites and releases it. He then fixates on the leash the handler is holding; the handler lures him with a treat and leashes him, but Ru briefly bites and holds the leash while exiting. Before netting the street, Ru fixates on the leash, but the handler straight arms it, so he stops. Ru walks ahead with mild to moderate leash tension; he doesn’t react to people or passersby. He follows the sit command given by the handler and eats a tossed treat. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Ru to his kennel. 3/27/26 (midday): Ru is reported to bite and tug the leash when being leashed, but treats redirect him. 3/27/26 (AM): Ru is observed to be licking and chewing his kennel bars; additionally, he is hypersalivating to the point that his chest is covered. Furthermore, when staff attempt to leash him, Ru continues to ficated on the bars; treats and toys are used, but don't redirect him. 3/19/26: Ru is at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and brought out the kennel; Ru quickly looks at the kennels next to his but continues to walk out the room. On the street, Ru walks ahead with mild to moderate leash tension; he doesn’t react to passersby. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and walks Ru towards his room; as a handler walks their dog past, Ru attempts to jump towards them, but the handler already has a shorten leash. He briefly fixates in the direction the dog walked, but he breaks his own focus. The handler brings Ru to the office; as they sit down, they motion Ru to climb onto the couch, and he does so. As the handler pets him, Ru lies down and curls his body. After a few minutes, the handler stands up and motions Ru to get off the couch, but he refuses; the handler adds leash tension, and Ru sits up, but refuses to move. The handler tosses treats near the door, and Ru gets off the couch to eat them. The handler then brings Ru to the room and returns him with ease.

Summary (7):: 3/12/26: Ru is at the front of his kennel with a soft body. He is easily leashed and brought out the room, which he pulls hard out of. The handler then brings Ru to the yard, where he immediately relieves himself. Then Ru is brought into the pen, where he sniffs around and relieve himself again. He then notices a small dog and focuses on it, but as the handler calls his name, Ru breaks his focus to briefly look at them. However, he looks back at the dog, so the handler shows him a treat, and Ru turns to face them. He eats the treat that’s tossed. The handler then brings Ru to his kennel, but he doesn’t enter as he eats food off the ground. The handler also tries to muscle into kennel but he doesn’t go in, so they toss treats inside and Ru finally enters. 3/6/26: It is reported on the behavior board that Ru could use a slow feeder. 3/6/26: Ru is sitting at the front of his kennel with a soft bod and wagging tail. he is easily leashed and brought out the room. The handler brings him to the driveway. There, he see a dog an attempts to pull towards it with a neutral body, but the handler guides him away and he break hi focus. Ru doesn't react to the other dogs present. He alks aroun ith mild leash tnesion. He is then brought in for his assessments (see notes). Afterwards, the handler walk Ru to his kennel but he doesn't enter on his own. So, the handler tosses treats into the kennel, and then Ru finally enters. 3/5/26: Ru has been reported to break out of his crate several times. Potential challenges: : Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (dog)

Potential challenges comments:: Bite History: Please see Bite history above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Defensive Aggression. Low Threshold for arousal: Ru has been showing a decreasing threshold for arousal in care. Noted to bite kennel bars, snap at locks on kennels towards hands, and leash biting. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Ru to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Ru. Please see hand-out on Arousal.
