Tiny
Hello, my name is Tiny. My animal id is #209707. I am a desexed female black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/27/2024, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too many animals already.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormTiny is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers. Tiny enjoys squeeze-up treats and she came from a home with many other cats. The behavior team believes she may warm up quicker with the company of a resident cat.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. A volunteer writes: Tiny is reportedly friendly and outgoing with other cats. As she sits on top of her cubby looking out at us with her ears tilted and flattened, I like to imagine her letting her ears up and becoming herself among friends. Unfortunately, Tiny hasn't found many friends in us at the shelter, but it's not for lack of trying. Each of our visits has led to Tiny not so patiently explaining that she doesn't actually like seeing us. Hissing to make herself as heard as possible, Tiny is trying to find her place. I told her we hear her, and her hisses, clear as a bell, but it can be kind of hard to find your place when saying hello just isn't your thing. We know that she's hoping to find the right family, a patient family, where she will be loved and accepted for exactly who she is.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/12/24 FB58 Laying at the back of her shelf with a tense face and body, ears tilted and flat as she hisses when the cage door is opened slightly. She continues to watch me and lip licks with a low body as I place a tray with squeeze up down. I also place a cover on the cage. 10/13/24 Vol. Tiny was on the shelf, hissing at me. She lunged at me through the glass. I did not open the kennel door because she seemed so afraid. I put treats next to her through the ventilation holes on the side and walked away. When I returned, she was eating the treats, seeming to be enjoying them. A put a few more through the ventilation holes. I stood in front of the kennel, watching. When she finished her treats, she began to hiss and lunge at me, so I ended the interaction. She will need time to settle in. 10/15/24 FB85 Sitting on the back of her shelf, face tense and body turned away from the door. Her ears are flat and she hisses with wide eyes when I open the food slot and offer a tray of treats. She does not move or show interest in interaction. 10/18/24 FB79 Inside her box bed, Tiny spits and lunges when i lift the kennel cover in order to get a look inside; she has flat airplane ears and wide/dilated eyes. She states as she stays at the front of the glass before hissing once again when i let the cover fall back down - i can hear her hissing through the glass and when i peak through the glass once again she is low in her box with flat airplane ears and once again lunges to the front with a harsh hiss and swat as she strikes the glass. 10/21/24 FB1261 Hunched on top of perch, body and face tense, pupils dilated and tail wrapped around feet. She hisses and lunges towards me when spoken to so I do not push petting today. I slow-blink and speak to her softly for a short while before placing some treats in her cubby along with a catnip toy. When I see her later I see that she's at the front of her cubby eating the treaties I left! Very nervous - will continue to build positive associations. 10/28/24 Tiny vocalizes during rounds but will curiously come forward when spoken to and placing my hand on the glass. She will slow blink and almost climb off her perch but remains hesitant. 10/30/24 At front of kennel, rolling around, vocalizing, putting on quite the show! She is very cute and you can appreciate how round she truly is when she's soliciting attention, however she is obviously showing signs of being in heat. She is back-peddling and vocalizing. These improved behaviors are very much likely due to her being in her heat cycle. 11/1/24 FB79 Sitting at the top part of her kennel, Tiny vocalizes/chirps and slow blinks at me when i lift the kennel cover and greet her softly. I open the kennel door and place some treats down as she takes a big step down with a mid level teal and soft eyes. I am able to pet her head and cheeks before she slowly retreats back to the top of her kennel when finished with her treats. GAN

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 9/30/24 Tiny is a shy, timid, and independent cat. She was lying down curled up on top of the shelf with her body facing the back wall and her head and ears turned facing the front, focused on the assessor with a tense body and wide, dilated eyes. She remains frozen and blankly stares at the assessor, ignoring treats offered, and allows petting on the head, cheeks, and body but lip licks, tucks her head into her shoulders, and leans away. During pick up, she remains tense and squirms when pulled and lifted off the shelf. After placing her back down, she lip licks again and tolerates brief petting; however, when the assessor pulls their hand away, Tiny hisses and spits at the assessor. 11/8/24 On the top part of her kennel, Tiny has her ears flat to her head as she spits and lunges when the assessor approaches; she has wide/dilated eyes continuing to hiss and lung when spoken to. Tiny lip licks, low growls/grumbles, hisses and spits while very closely watching the assessor and their movements. When the scratcher tool was inserted in attempt to make contact Tiny back herself to the back corner of the kennel with her ears still flat to her head as she lip licked and grumbled; she very briefly allowed the tool to touch her head for pets before she strikes the tool while lunging. Tiny continued to lung, hiss and spit until the kennel cover as placed back down. 12/8/24 Still displaying the same behaviors described in the assessment above, Tiny hisses/spits when the assessor approaches and opens the kennel door; she has wide/dilated eyes and a low body. She closely watches the assessor for any movements and attempts to lung when the scratcher tool is slowly introduced. Tiny does however recover when treats are tossed in front of her and leans in to sniff - she only comes forward to enjoy when the kennel door is closed and the assessor gives her space. Tiny is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat/strike, hiss, spit, lung and is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior team feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
