Animal Profile

Buddy

Hello, my name is Buddy. My animal id is #268854. I am a male gray brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/22/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - moving - no pets allowed.

Buddy needs at risk placement for medical reasons. He is a sweet dog with a large mass on his right elbow that prevents him from extending his leg. He also has arthritic changes in his left front limb, but he is able to walk around on 3 legs and likes to explore the neighborhood. He needs placement in a quiet home to enjoy his days and receive palliative care.

THORAX AND THORACIC LIMBS October 23, 2026: Opposite lateral and ventrodorsal views are provided, for a total of 7 images submitted. FINDINGS: • Cardiovascular: The cardiac silhouette is normal in size and no abnormalities of the pulmonary vasculature are seen. • Lungs: A mild bronchial pattern is noted diffusely throughout the lungs. There is no evidence of bronchopneumonia or pulmonary nodules. • Trachea/Bronchi: The trachea and lobar bronchi are normal. • Esophagus: No abnormalities of the esophagus are detected. • Mediastinum/Thoracic Lymph Nodes: The mediastinum is normal in size and no masses are detected. No thoracic lymphadenopathy is identified. • Pleural space: The pleural space is within normal limits. • Cranial abdomen: The cranial abdomen is within normal limits. • Thoracic limbs: There is a large, expansile osteolytic lesion of the right ulna extending from the level of the mid diaphysis proximally to the olecranon. This lesion results in diffuse bony destruction with a loculated/septated appearance, and associated soft tissue swelling. There is atrophy of the right thoracic limb musculature in comparison to the left. Mild osteophytosis of the shoulder and elbow joint is present bilaterally incidentally. CONCLUSIONS: Aggressive lesion of the right proximal ulna. This is primarily concerning for neoplasia including a round cell tumor. A primary bone tumor is also possible. No signs of pulmonary metastatic neoplasia are seen. Mild bilateral shoulder osteoarthrosis and elbow osteoarthrosis. RECOMMENDATIONS: Histopathology or cytology of the bone lesion is needed for definitive diagnosis neoplasia to help guide further treatment. ADDENDUM 10/24/26 07:08 PM Changes of the left thoracic limb are further elaborated in this addendum. Mild osteophytes are present on the caudal aspect of the left shoulder joint. The left elbow joint is congruent. There is mild osteophytosis of the left radial head, humeral condyle and proximal ulna. The medial epicondyle of the left ulna has an irregular caudal contour, consistent with chronic enthesopathy. Subchondral sclerosis is noted in the trochlear notch of the left ulna. No osseous abnormalities of the left carpus and manus are seen. There are no aggressive bone lesions of the left thoracic limb detected. AMENDED CONCLUSIONS: Mild left shoulder osteoarthrosis. Left elbow osteoarthrosis there is consistent with elbow dysplasia, likely due to medial coronoid process disease. A: RFL lameness with aggressive bony lesion r/o neoplasia left elbow dysplasia prognosis: Guarded to poor given concerns for poor QOL post amputation and likelihood of neoplasia in RFL Plan Consider humane euthanasia

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2

Potential challenges: : Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Buddy's previous owner states that he is anxious in the home. If Buddy displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Buddy's previous owner states that he is reactive to cats. In care, Buddy has been observed to bark when dogs walk past his crate. Buddy will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
