Animal Profile

Prince Khan

Hello, my name is Prince Khan . My animal id is #255761. I am a desexed male fawn dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 5/29/2026, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit - too big.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Prince Khan is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Prince Khan initially displayed fearful behavior during kennel exit, including low growling, reluctance to leave the kennel, freezing, laying down, and a tucked tail. He has also displayed high arousal behaviors including jumping on handlers and biting at the leash or harness during walks. Prince Khan also smears his kennel in feces due to his jumping off his walls of his kennel.. Prince Khan seeks out treats and social interaction but is struggling in the care center. Medically, Prince Khan is overweight and has a Grade II heart murmur.

Pre-Screener Form Prince Khan is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Prince Khan initially displayed fearful behavior during kennel exit, including low growling, reluctance to leave the kennel, freezing, laying down, and a tucked tail. Prince Khan also smears his kennel in feces due to his jumping off his walls of his kennel.. Prince Khan seeks out treats and social interaction but is struggling in the care center. Medically, Prince Khan is overweight and has a Grade II heart murmur. Prince Khan was surrendered into care due to his previous owner's health concerns and his size. He is described as a very active and playful dog who enjoys spending most of his time relaxing in the living room. He loves going for car rides, and his favorite activities include running and playing with sticks. Prince's previous owner did report destructive tendencies to furniture and walls. During his stay in care, Prince Khan was loose and wiggly upon intake. When initially attempting to leash him for walks, Prince Khan would growl at handlers/staff and would not exit his kennel. Over time, with a slow, reward-based approach/interactions, Prince Khan has now been social with handlers and staff. He has become challenging to walk due to his arousal on walks and leash biting. Due to these concerns, we reocmmend for him to be placed in an adult-only home through a New Hope rescue partner that can address these challenges with a certified professional trainer that utilizes positive reinforcement only methods. A volunteer writes: It's hard to appreciate Prince Khan's size until you meet him in real life. He's a solid 86lbs, a big tall boy, but also a young one. Only a year old, he is perhaps unaware he is no longer puppy sized. He plays with reckless abandon, slapping a tennis ball to the watch it roll around the yard and pouncing on it as it does. At one point he loses track of it all together, looking around Tom & Jerry style only to find it beneath him. He takes a rest by putting all 86lbs on our laps, and eventually just laying at our feet reveling in a belly rub. The obvious thing here is that shelter life is not easy for a large, young, energetic dog. And Prince Khan is proof of this. While he's able to get some energy out with us and relax at our feet, his daily life in the shelter doesn't include regular breaks from his kennel to move his body. He's frustrated and biting the leash and it's led to him only being able to be walked by select staff members. In his previous home Prince lived with a cat and a child that he was reported to get along with. Due to his size and his guardians health, they could no longer care for him. Now he needs a rescue and a good home to care for him, and provide an enriching and fulfilling life that he deserves.

My medical notes are...

Weight: 85.8 lbs

This continues for several minutes before he pops up and squeezes himself behind the handler and the back of the couch. Prince leans on the hadnler's back for a few seconds before wrapping his front legs around the handler's shoulders as they begin to stand to give him space, attempting to mount. He is easily refocused with treats and bounces away. Prince briefly engages himself with a toy he finds before being walked back to his kennel. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the high level of jumping, anxiety, fearfulness, and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend a home without children at this time. Recommend no dog parks: Due to Prince Khan's behavior in playgroup, we recommend he does not visit dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the behavior concerns displayed in the previous home and during stay in care, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Prince Khan is noted to be partially housetrained and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Please see the handout on House soiling. Destructive behavior: Prince Khan was reported to destroy furniture and walls in the previous home. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior, but we suggest to future adopters that Prince Khan will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive behavior. Basic manners/poor impulse control | Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition| Anxiety: Throughout his assessment, Prince Khan would persistently jump up on handlers and then began pacing while panting heavily. At the end, he approaches a seated handler and begins mouthing at their hand and fingers. There is no pressure, and he pauses when the hadnler puts their hand in their pocket to grab and offer treats as a redirection. These behaviors suggest a need for consistent training to improve his manners and impulse control. Using positive reinforcement and redirection will help manage these behaviors effectively. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control, generalized anxietey, and Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Pricne Khan began growling while in his kennel when a handler attempted to leash him. He initially presented as fearful but has warmed up with time, a slow approach, and the use of treats. During his medical exam, similar behaviors were observed. His signs of discomfort must be respected; Prince Khan should never be forced to interact, and he should always be allowed to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. We recommend a slow approach, and we recommend ONLY force-free, reward-based training methods for Prince Khan. More aversive techniques are likely to increase fear, increase the risk of aggression, and decrease his quality of life. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Low threshold for arousal | Leash Biting: Prince Khan is quick to grab the leash in his mouth. We recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach him to focus on you rather than grab the leash. Please see handout on Arousal.
