Dasher

Hello, my name is Dasher. My animal id is #84700. I am a desexed male brown dog at the . The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 12/26/2019.

Someone has already placed a deposit on me. I'm no longer available.

Dasher is at risk for behavioral reasons. Dasher has deteriorated during his stay in the care center and has exhibited a high stress response as well as increasing reactivity towards other dogs. Dasher would be best suited for an experienced dog owner. Medically, Dasher seems healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A staff member writes: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen... Wait! Let's go back to Dasher. Dasher is a gentle giant weighing at 121 lbs, but don't let that fool you! He does not pull, is a great walker, and politely greets both people and other dogs. My story: I was found with a homeless man who said I was a stray. He came in the day after Christmas - and is still here. A lad like him shouldn't be here that long, not only because of his gorgeous looks, but also because of his gentle personality. If you have a house with a backyard, or even a smaller place, but you are willing to take me on long walks regularly, then please adopt me!

My medical notes are...

Date of intake:: 12/26/2019

Summary:: Soft, leaned into petting, allowed handling

Date of initial:: 12/27/2019

Summary:: Tense, growled for vaccine

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Dasher so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. At the care center, he displays a medium level of activity.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 1/2: When handler bent down to reach for Dasher's leash in the yard, he low growled. 1/30: Dasher remains attention seeking with his familiar care takers though remains timid with strangers. In the care center, Dasher appears to be becoming increasingly stressed and frustrated; he has displayed a high level of reactivity to other dogs while moving through the kennel areas (hard barking, growling and lunging).

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to the discomfort Dasher currently displays at the care center, we feel he may be intimidated by children and that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Single pet home/no dog parks: See DOG-DOG.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Dasher is hesitant to be leashed and removed from his kennel. During the handling assessment, he displays some discomfort with handlers, panting, drooling, and hesitant to approach when called, but warming up slightly with time. Dasher also growled during a portion of his medical exam. He will benefit from a slow approach and time to adjust in a new home setting. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
