Animal Profile

Chalula

Hello, my name is Chalula. My animal id is #263679. I am a male brown brindle dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 8/27/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Chalula is at risk due to behavior concerns. Throughout his time in care, Chalula has displayed fearful defensive behaviors including discomfort with handling with certain staff members, barking whenever staff enters through doorways, and has shown reluctance to walk on leash, balking and thrashing when mild leash pressure is applied. Chalula has shown social behaviors with select staff members, will accept brief petting and engages with treat puzzles and enrichment games. Medically, Chalula is apparently healthy.

Chalula was surrendered into care as a stray, so his past behavior in a home environment is unknown. Chalula has been highly fearful during his stay in care and is not acclimating well to the shelter enviornment. He has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray; history unknown

Date of assessment:: 9/27/2026

Summary:: 9/27/26: Leash Walking Strength and pulling: moderate - hard pulling Reactivity to humans: did not pass Reactivity to dogs: did not pass Leash walking comments: Sociability Loose in room (15-20 seconds): engages with handlers, hard barks when hearing dogs or people outside of office, easy to refoucs with treats Call over: approaches with coaxing Sociability comments: Handling Soft handling: sits, allows contact, distracted Exuberant handling: sits, allows contact, distracted Handling comments: presses body into assessor's lap when they sit, leans into neck and chin rubs Arousal Jog: follows, distracted Arousal comments: Knock: hard bark, hackles raised, stiff body Knock Comments: forward-facing Toy: ignores Toy comments: 8/27/26: A handling assessment is unable to be completed due to Chalula's high levels of fearfulness and shutdown behavior.

Summary:: Chalula arrived as a stray, so her behavior with other dogs is unknown. 9/25/26: Chalula greets a novel male dog through a barrier. Chalula approaches displaying a stiff, tense body and remains fixated on the novel male, who displays similarly tense body language and hard stares toward her. Neither dog chooses to disengage from the interaction, requiring staff to move both dogs away from the barrier to prevent further escalation.

Summary (6):: 9/29/26: Chalula is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches and is leashed with ease. He is taken to the behavior room, pulling mildly, where he is clipped to a drag line and sniffs and explores the room with a neutral body searching for treats, orienting to a snuffle mat on the floor. When handlers enter the room, he lifts his head and gives one or two barks but is easily redirected back to the snuffle mat. He is returned to his kennel with no issues. 9/26/26: Chalula is sitting on his bed at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front with a loose body and is able to be leashed with ease. He then pulls on the way outside for play group. When reaching outside, he begins to constantly jump up on the handler and begins to thrash on the leash while walking up the ramp. Once at the top, he is then quickly taken to the yard. In the yard, he would continue to jump up on the handler and mouth at their hands. He greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body and his hackles raised. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 9/25/26: Chalula is laying down on his bed as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front with a loose body as the handler unlocks the door and he takes treats roughly from the handler’s hand as they leash him. Once leashed, he is then taken into the behavior room. In the room, he greets another handler with a loose body by jumping up on the couch and is comfortable taking treats. He then jumps off the couch and is comfortable engaging in a snuffle mat full of treats. Each time a handler would enter and exit the room and he heard the sound of the door, he would let out a bark, look up at the door and then go back to engaging with the snuffle mat. When being returned back to his kennel, he would baulk to the ground and is able to exit the room with a treat trail. He is then taken back to his kennel with no issues.

Summary (7):: 9/22/26: Chalula is at the front of the kennel as the handler approaches. He will jump onto the kennel door as the handler opens the door. He is leashed with a treat and will exit with no issue and pulls moderately down the hallway. Once they exit the staff entrance onto the side walk, Chalula lags behind the handler slightly and when the handler takes another step, he will begin to thrash intensely. The handler will wait for him to stop thrashing and they attempt one more time to bring him up the side walk with some treats. He will startle when an air break goes off and will start to thrash again. He is then brought back inside and will walk with a loose leash back to his kennel where he is secured safely. 09/18/26: It is reported that Chalula has been thrashing and refusing to walk after a certain point when being taken out for PM walks. He has not been receptive to treats and toys and only makes it up to the ramp before balking and thrashing when any leash pressure is applied to guide him back inside. 9/4/26: Chalula is at front of kennel with a neutral body. Handler uses a treat lure to leash him, the first attempt he dodged out of the way of the leash. Chalula is taken for a street walk. Coming out of kennel Chalula moves slowly with a slightly lowered body and tucked tail. Once out of kennel he moves with a neutral body and walks next to handler as the exit the room. Outside Chalula walks slightly ahead of handler while lightly pulling. He ignores the treats that handler offers. After his walk he is returned to kennel with no issue. 08/30/26: Before the handler takes out Chalula, they notice that Chalula is sitting at the back of the kennel, shaking. When the handler returns several minutes later, Chalula is at the front of the kennel. He is leashed with ease and brought to the office. In the office, he sniffs around. He initially doesn't take treats from the handler, but will eat higher value things like cheese and sausages. The handler is able to place a collar on him while he eats spray cheese off of the wall. He continues to explore the room after that. When returning to kennel, Chalula stops outside of the kennel door, but walks in with no issue when treats are tossed inside

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Chalula is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Recommend no dog parks: Due to Chalula's behavior in playgroup, we recommend she does not visit dog parks. Place with a New Hope partner: Chalua has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Chalula has been highly fearful during his stay in care. He has escalated to hard barking with his hackles raised when unfamiliar handlers enter the behavior office. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Chalula should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be his choice to approach a new person or thing. Chalula would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Handling/touch sensitivity: Chalula has thrashed intensely when outside and being brought back into the building. He is treat-motivated and would benefit from moving slowly with him, with the opportunity to move away when uncomfortable with handling or interaction. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity.
