Blue
Hello, my name is Blue. My animal id is #182404. I am a desexed male brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years 6 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/27/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
Blue is on the at-risk list for medical and behavioral reasons. In his previous home, his owner notes that Blue will persistently chases his tail. This behavior has been seen since he was a puppy and when became more frequent when the other family dog was rehomed. In shelter, the environment is increasing this compulsion. He needs a quiet home with a patient family willing to work on finding the appropriate treatment for this behavior. Blue is currently receiving treatment for possible pneumonia and has been started on a behavior medication plan to help with the compulsion of chasing his tail. Medically, the dog has pneumonia.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
upon intake, Blue had a neutral body pose and socially jumped on me when owner greeted me outside the MACC. Blue body became tense once inside the lobby. didn't collar due to influx of intakes. allowed scanning. mc positive. allowed me to place slip leash with ease. walked along side me towards hallway door and then froze and became very tense. Owner came over to help Blue come inside the hallway. Once he was inside the hallway and making our way towards intake room, Blue froze and began to pancake a bit. Staff who was next to me, helped me by using his leash as a belly band to help me take blue towards the intake room as he was very hesitant to walk.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: During his stay in the care center Blue has been observed to vocalize, lunge and snap towards handler in kennel. It is important to move slowly with Blue, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Anxiety: Blue is highly anxious and was reported to chase his tail and bite it when he does not have a muzzle. Blue's adopter should seek a positive reinforcement trainer to consult on his obsessive behavior.
