Animal Profile

Fushigi

Hello, my name is Fushigi. My animal id is #227564. I am a male gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/21/2025.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Fushigi is at-risk due to behavior concerns. He arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. During his stay in the care center Fushigi has been observed to be kennel, dog, and rope reactive. Noted to jump up high and bite the leash in and out of kennel. When being returned to kennel Fushigi spins and pulls the leash into kennel. When in the kennel room Fushigi has been observed to vocalize and pull hard towards the other dogs in the kennel room, occasionally kennel fighting. He has remained social with handlers, will lean in for pets, and is very food motivated. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. During his stay he has been social with handlers - seeking attention and affection. However, he has also shown high levels of reactivity in the stressful shelter setting (kennel, dog and rope reactivity) and he has become increasingly challenging to safely handle. Fushigi needs a soft quiet place to land where he can show you his very best doggy self. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles! I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

Summary (6):: 5/26/25: Fushigi is at the front of kennel with a loose body as handles approach. He attempts to mouth the leash at first attempt, second handler uses spray cheese to successfully double leash Fushigi. As he is removed from kennel he spins towards handler in the back, and then spins forward, all whilst intensely leash biting, and kennel fighting. He continues jumping up towards handlers hand as his leash biting continues all the way to the yard. He is kept on a single leash while out in the pen. Fushigi maintains a loose and wiggly body while interacting with handlers. When spotting dogs passing by or in the other pen, he pulls very hard towards them, becomes tense, and has a high stiff tail. He is not easily redirected and some muscle has to be used. Fushigi is double leashed upon return. He displays the same behavior but at a higher intensity. As soon as he reaches the front of his kennel, he retreats quickly, handlers have to muscle him in, and when stepping in the kennel he quickly spins back around, lunges, and bites both leashes. He intensely pulls them into his kennel and begins to rip them up. When a hook was attempted to remove the leashes from kennel he bites, holds, and shakes the hook. Spray cheese was used but was ineffective. Handlers left and returned later for their leashes.

Summary (7):: 5/25/25: Fushigi is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins to hard bark and jump on his kennel door as handler unlocks it. While attempt to leash, he begins to leash bite and tries to take the leash inside. The handler was then able to close the door and get their leash back. The handler then uses spray cheese to distract him and he is then leashed with ease. Once leashed, he bolts out of kennel and pulls hard to try to get towards the kennels while vocalizing. He is able to be distracted when the handler tosses treats on the ground in front of him. Once outside, he becomes loose bodied and would walk ahead of the handler and stop at each tree to mark his territory. He had no reactions to people and would stare at dogs with a tense body that were across the street. When returning back to kennel, he begins to pull hard and vocalize while in the hallway and tries to pull towards the kennels on the way to his kennel. He baulks when reaching the front of his kennel and the handler has to muscle him in. He tries to bolt back out, but the handler is able to close the door before he could do so. He then pulls the handlers leash inside. The handler comes back with a hook and he begins to chew at the leash and bite at the hook. The handler tosses treats to distract him, but when he sees the leash moving forward, he tugs at it. The handler then tosses treats at him one more time and he drops it and then the handler is able to pull the leash out of his kennel quickly. 5/24/25- ACS have reported Fushigi cage fights and when returning to kennel, he spins and jumps at handler to bite at leash. 05/22/25: Fushigi is at the front of his kennel sitting down with his tail wagging as handler approaches. He is offered treats and accepts them gently before being leashed and exiting kennel fast. He pulls hard out the room and is somewhat frantic when walking down the hallways. Once outside on the street he begins to sniff around and his pulling becomes more mild, he passes people on the street without issue. When spotting a dog he stares at them with a neutral body posture and when walking away he attempts to turn back around to stare at the dog for a bit. He is then brought to the behavior office for his assessment, during which he approaches handlers with a loose and wiggly body posture. He accepts treats tossed and allows collaring and petting while distracted with treats. After a bit he is brought back to kennel and pulls hard when returning.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Fushigi so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and rope reactivity we recommend a home with no children. No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Fushigi has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. On Leash Reactivity: Fushigi has been observed to pull hard and vocalize towards the other dogs in the kennel room. Fushigi will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Fushigi has been observed to jump up and bite the leash in and out of kennel. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
