This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Blueshell needs at risk for medical reasons. She is a sweet, geriatric dog with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex. She needs placement in a home in order to overcome her infection. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I am a sweet, social, older gentleman, looking for the perfect forever home!

My medical notes are...

Weight: 79 lbs

Summary:: Wagging tail and seeking attention

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Blue Shell so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)

Recommendations comments:: No young children (under 5): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no young children.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Blue has been observed to become tense while a handler was trying to place a collar on him. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Blue would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: Blue will become tense and pull hard towards other dogs while on leash. This behavior is able to be readily redirected using treats. Blue will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
