Summary (6):: 12/2/25- Barklee is sleeping on his bed when handler approaches, he wakes up as handler unlocks his door. Handler softly calls to him and Barklee wags the tip of his tail. They continue talking to him and he comes to the front, easily leashed and taken to the play yard. Handler goes into a pen and he allows them to collar him. He is placed on a drag leash and explores the pen, relieving himself. There is a dog in the neighboring pen Barklee goes to the fence and has a neutral body with a medium tail, the other dog barks at him. Handler calls to him and he follows handler, he jumps on their leg with his front paws. He allows handler to gently scratch his head and chin. He gently takes treats from handler then goes back to exploring the pen. Handler clips their leash to Barklee's collar without issue and undoes the drag. Barklee sniffs more when returning back inside and easily goes into kennel allowing handler to unclip from his collar. 12/2/25: Barklee is at the back laying on his bed when handler approaches. He comes forward with soft body and jumps onto the kennel bars soft body. He is lured down with treats and easily leashed with a pre-clipped leash. He is walked on the street where he stops often to sniff and mark. He is aloof not seeking handler attention. When the leash touches his side, he turns his head and sniffs it then bounces forward. He is easily returned to kennel. 12/1/25: Barklee displays the same behaviors as of (11/30). Please refer to those notes. 11/30/25: Barklee is siting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front and jumps up at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed with ease and is taken outside for walk. Along the way, he would quickly thrash due to the leash getting stuck under his leg. Once outside, he is able to walk slowly ahead of the handler with a tense body as he explores around. He has no reactions to dogs or people. Along the way back to his kennel, he begins to baulk and refuse to walk forward. He is able to be slowly guided to his kennel as the handler began to jog, and he is then quickly able to jump into his kennel with no further issues.

Summary (7):: 11/29/25(PM): Barklee is at the back of his kennel laying down as handler approaches. He is offered treats btu does not accept any, as handler unlocks the door he approaches and jumps/leans on the kennel door. He is leashed after a few attempts and walked out the kennel to the street for his walk. Barklee has a slightly low hunched posture and stops to sniff frequently and to relieve himself. He will also stop if he hears loud noises and will stare in the direction of the noise for a bit. Handler waits until Barklee has finished investigating whatever he is fixated on before attempting to pull him forward or continue walking, Barklee pulls mildly during his walk and will become slightly tense when initially passing people on the street but becomes more relaxed when passing people as the walk continues. When seeing dogs, Barklee shows no reaction, he ignores treats offered to him and after walking for a while he is brought back inside. He allows handler to clip his leash and begins slowly returning to kennel, he stops and stares at staff in the hallway before continuing to kennel, he also pulls inquisitively toward the dogs he passes, attempting to sniff them. He enters kennel without further issue and interaction is ended. 11/29/25: Barklee is lying down and comes to the front with a loose body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. Once outside, Barklee sees another dog, but doesn't react. On the street, Barklee walks ahead with light pulling, stopping to relieve himself. He then stops walking, and turns around to watch a passerby walk in his direction. As the handler gently pulls Barklee to move out the way, Barklee briefly thrashes. After the passersby walks past, the handler continues the walk. Barklee stares at people before and after they walk past him. The handler gently pulls Barklee again, but he thrashes once more. The, the handler uses their squeaker, and Barklee jumps on them with a neutral body and allow pets from the handler. When walking back to the shelter, the handler adds leash tension and Barklee thrashes again. Afterward, he continues to walk normally. The handler clips their leash and returns Barklee to kennel. On 11/27/25: Upon intake, Barklee was very fearful while I was trying to leash him, even going slow. After leashing him, he started to head whip and thrash multiple times in the lobby, when he stopped he'd take a few steps. Eventually, made it to the hallway then would pancake about 3 times and thrash all the way into the room. had to be forced into the kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Barklee so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: During intake Barklee was obsvered to begin thrashing intensely. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Barklee would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
